2005 Madrid Jazz Festival entrusts
a third of its bill to flamenco jazz
Chick Corea
& Touchstone, Niño Josele and Diego Amador, on
the bill
S.C. Madrid, October 2005
Within the aim of “tackling
the complexity and diversity of jazz” which moves
the 2005 Madrid Jazz Festival, there's room for the jondo
side of things. Flamenco jazz is going to be widely represented
in this twenty-second edition, which is to be held from
November 1st to December 1st at several stages in the city.
The star concert of flamenco jazz is going to be offered
by Chick Corea, who presents his album ‘Rhumba Flamenco’
together with Jorge
Pardo, Carles Benavent and Rubem Dantas on November
5th at the Madrid Cultural Center (Centro Cultural de la
Villa).

Also joining in on this current is guitarist
Niño
Josele, who on Saturday, November 12th will provide
a peek of some of the versions of pianist Bill Evans which
will make up his next album, promoted by Fernando Trueba
and Bebo Valdés. Taking part in the project are Marc
Johnson, Horacio el Negro and Joe Lovano, among others.
This upcoming record already has an anecdote. When he found
out about this project at the press conference of the festival's
presentation, Paquito D’Rivera yelled at the Almería-born
guitarist for not having called on him for the recording.
And he nearly interviewed him on the subject: “That's
tremendously interesting, kid. You have to tell me why it
sounds as if Celia Cruz were sung by Pavarotti”. Those
attending burst out laughing with the Cuban saxophonist,
who opens the festival.
There will be more flamenco. Diego
Amador will offer his ‘Piano jondo’ concert
on Friday the 11th, while Son de la Frontera will refresh
Diego del Gastor on Sunday the 20th. In the 10th Ciudad
Lineal Jazz Festival, Enrique Heredia ‘El Negri’
will do a live presentation of his first solo album, ‘El
último beso’, a tribute to Agustín Lara.
And appearing at concert halls spread throughout the city
will be other groups such as La
Shica, Jose Luis Montón's La Banda del Aire and
Pedro Ojesto Trio with Ramón el Portugués,
among others.
