Twelve editions now endorse Festival
de Jerez, the main event with flamenco dancing and Spanish
dance on the international stage circuit. From February
22nd to March 8th, 2008, several venues in the Cádiz-area
city of Jerez will offer a varied selection of shows with
different formats and trends, by veteran maestros, recognized
figures and young talents. Eva
Yerbabuena with ‘Santo y seña’,
Manuela
Carrasco with ‘Romalí’, Isabel
Bayón with ‘La puerta abierta’ and
Israel Galván with ‘El final de este estado
de cosas’ stand out on the bill, which is complemented
by guitar and cante recitals, round-tables, presentations
and a wide range of courses.

Festival de Jerez 2008 is already on
the bill. And it does so by “decidedly laying stakes
on the creative evolution of flamenco, on the development
of its expressive forms and on the modernization - from
tradition - of its styles”. In such an open scheme
there’s room for new shows by bailaores such as
Israel Galván with ‘El final de este estado
de cosas’, Eva Yerbabuena with ‘Santo y seña’,
Isabel
Bayón with ‘La puerta abierta... but
also veteran maestra Manuela
Carrasco, the splendid winner of the 2007 National
Dance Prize, with ‘Romalí’. All of
them will make appearances at the Teatro Villamarta, the
festival’s main stage, where there will be a total
of fourteen shows, among them, ‘Puertas adentro’
by Antonio el Pipa, ‘Tiempo muerto’ by Rafael
Amargo, ‘El alba del último día’
by Andrés Marín, and ‘Al natural’
by Farru,
José Maya and Barullo.
The program includes two collective galas.
The first one, inaugurating the festival, will be ‘¡Viva
Jerez!’, which will enjoy the participation of María
del Mar Moreno, Mercedes Ruiz, Fernando Terremoto
and Angelita Gómez, directed by Javier Latorre,
Paco Cepero and Francisco López. The second one
is ‘Mujeres’, a show directed by Mario Maya
with the participation of bailaoras Merche Esmeralda,
Belén
Maya and Rocío Molina, which will also be at
Flamenco Festival USA 2008 and Flamenco Festival London
2008. Dancing will only yield the spotlight to cante on
Friday, March 7th, when Miguel
Poveda – winner of the 2007 National Music Prize
- presents ‘Sin frontera’; and in the closure,
shared by bailaor Güito and by guitarist Manolo
Sanlúcar.

At midnight, the Jerez festival will
hold the ‘Solos en Compañía’
series at the Sala Compañía, which Marcos
Flores, Manuela Ríos, María Juncal and
El Mistela will take part in; and the ‘Los Novísimos’
series, with Leonor Leal, Patricia Guerrero and Fran Espinosa.
The old church will also host evening series such as ‘De
la Frontera’ with the show by Marcos Vargas and
Chloé Brûle ‘Las 24. Cuando uno quiere
y el otro no’; and the new series ‘Con nombre
propio’, starring artists like Lola Greco, Rafaela
Carrasco and Mayte Bajo. The rest of the bill tends
to cante and toque at venues as emblematic as Bodega de
Los Apóstoles and Palacio de Villavicencio. Cantaores
such as Capullo
de Jerez, José Menese, Calixto Sánchez,
David Palomar... and guitarists like Daniel Casares, Pedro
Sierra and José
Manuel León will take part in these series,
besides groups such as Son de la Frontera and Ultra High
Flamenco.
