Learning to dance por bulerías
with castanets, paying tribute to Chano Lobato with a bata
de cola por alegrías, giving free rein to creativity
in a choreography workshop or knowing how to clap in a fiesta
are just a few of the many skills which can be learnt from
February 27th to March 13th at Festival de Jerez 2010. Beginning
on September 1st, about one thousand students from all over
the world are called to register at this prestigious school
where studying is done both in the classrooms and in the
audience at shows. In addition to the incentive of receiving
first-hand lessons from today’s most reputed bailaores,
pupils have tickets to the Teatro Villamarta included and
take part in midday round-tables, besides experiencing the
unique ambience in the flamenco city… even with children,
since the Flamenco Nursery once again opens its doors to
them.

It is still shaping up the show schedule,
but Festival de Jerez 2010 has already released its program
of courses, workshops and master classes related to flamenco
dancing. In this fourteenth edition, the festival offers
a total of 36 courses, four clapping and compás workshops,
and two master classes. In total, there is now an offer
of over one thousand places which can be applied for beginning
on September 1st, 2009, the date when registration opens.
On the course calendar, each course one week in length and
with 25 places, veteran maestros stand out such as Matilde
Coral, who offers a course in bata de cola por alegrías
in tribute to her cantaor Chano Lobato, Sevillian Manolo
Marín, Granada-born Manolete and Jerez-born Angelita
Gómez. For the first time, these lessons are joined
by the master class which, with the title ‘Maestros
of Jerez’, will be taught by José Parra, who
was Joaquín Grilo and Andrés Peña’s
instructor.
In contrast, part of this teaching faculty
is highlighted by latest-generation bailaores like Concha
Jareño, winner of the past edition’s ‘Revelation
Prize’, Mercedes Ruiz, Olga Pericet and Manuel Liñán.
Situated between both generations is that of the instructors
with now acclaimed careers such as Belén Maya, Isabel
Bayón, Rafaela Carrasco, Antonio el Pipa and Ángel
Muñoz, among others. This offer of courses by style
and level (initiation, elementary, intermediate and advanced)
is joined by Javier
Latorre’s new Choreography and Technique Workshops,
whose result will be presented with an audience at the Sala
Compañía. Moreover, the compás and
clapping workshops aimed at baile pupils and the public
in general are being reinforced.
Complementary services for students
With registration for each course, tickets
to the Teatro Villamarta are included for the days of that
course. Pupils also have access to the midday round-tables
at the Bodega de San Ginés, where artists personally
present their shows and where books are presented and debates
are held, as well as the documentary archives of the Centro
Andaluz de Flamenco (Andalusian Flamenco Center). It takes
care of the shows of the other stages and the ambience-laden
off-festival. Aiming to facilitate the enjoyment of this
complete offer, for the second year the organization opens
the Flamenco Nursery service, which in the past edition
welcomed some thirty boys and girls who were the children
of the festival’s pupils, instructors and workers.
