Festival de Jerez 2011 portrays today’s flamenco
dancing in a panoramic format. Different trends come together
on the bill of the fifteenth edition, which is to be held
from February 25th to March 12th, 2011. The program opens
with the premiere of ‘Danzacalí’ by the
Antonio
el Pipa Company and closes with Eva Yerbabuena’s
new show, ‘Cuando yo era…’. Between both
shows, there will be over fifty performances such as ‘En
la horma de sus zapatos’ by Isabel Bayón, ‘Tranquilo
alboroto’ by Rubén Olmo, ‘Suspiro flamenco’
by Manuela Carrasco, ‘Tres’ by Belén
Maya, ‘Ángel’ by Ángel Muñoz
and ‘Cambio de tercio’ by Nuevo Ballet Español.
The bill of this fifteenth edition is completed by cante
recitals, concerts, workshops, encounters with maestros
and the training
program, which offers over a thousand places to students
from all over the world.

Plurality, both generational and stylistic,
is the most outstanding feature of Festival de Jerez 2011’s
show schedule. The fifteenth bill of the great flamenco
dancing and Spanish dance showcase highlights the new shows
by veterans of this specialty like La
Farruca, who in ‘Homenaje a los grandes’
pays tribute to Carmen Amaya, Farruco and Lola Flores; and
Manuela Carrasco, who returns to the Teatro Villamarta with
‘Suspiro flamenco’ following her ‘Romalí’
in 2008.
The city’s main stage will host some
of the top names in today’s flamenco dancing such
as Antonio el Pipa with ‘Danzacalí’ and
Eva
Yerbabuena with ‘Cuando yo era…’,
who will star in the inauguration and the close, respectively;
as well as Javier Barón with ‘Vaivenes’,
Isabel Bayón with ‘En la horma de sus zapatos’
and Javier Latorre directing ‘El duende y el reloj’
and ‘La Celestina’ by the Ballet Kojima. New
talents, although already with a solid career, are also
to present their shows at this venue. That is the case of
Olga
Pericet who, having won the Revelation Prize in the
previous edition, performs ‘Rosa, metal y ceniza’
solo.
La Sala Compañía comes on
strong in this edition. It will be the stage where new shows
are presented like ‘Tres’ by Belén
Maya, ‘Ángel. Vuelo/baile flamenco del
blanco al negro’ by Ángel
Muñoz and ‘Callejón de asta’
by Andrés Peña, all with double performances.
Also to be staged there is ‘Horizonte’ by Adela
Campallo and a baile recital by José Maya, among
others. La Sala Paúl shapes up as a multi-purpose
venue which has room for everything from dramatic baile
shows like La Choni’s ‘La gloria de mi mare’
to music concerts such as ‘Bipolar’ by the group
Ultra High Flamenco. Cante will have all the spotlight at
the Palacio de Villavicencio. Voices will be heard in acoustics
there such as those of Miguel
Ortega, veterans like Luis Moneo and newcomers such
as María Mezcle. The exception is provided by Miguel
Poveda, who will stage ‘Historias de viva voz’
at the Villamarta.

Workshops and maestros
The festival’s training area also
expands through the general program. Apart from the baile
courses which will be attended by over a thousand students
from all over the world, a novelty includes the workshop
‘Comprende el flamenco. Aprende a distinguir los palos’
(‘Understand Flamenco. Learn to Distinguish the Styles.’),
with several matinées at the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco
(Andalusian Flamenco Center). Equally educational will be
the encounters there with flamenco maestros such as Manolo
Marín, Los Gitanillos de Cádiz and Juan Romero
Pantoja ‘El Guapo’. All of them are part of
a bill which Festival de Jerez hopes to uphold its figures
with. In its previous edition, 34,000 people took part in
the festival, situating the level of occupation of the 135
scheduled activities at 93 per cent.
