Festival de Jerez 2013, the world’s great showcase for flamenco dancing and Spanish dance, will be a festival of novelties. Many of the leading figures at present are to attend the event in Jerez to present their new projects in the setting of a program which stages 53 shows from February 22nd to March 9th at different stages in the city, at the same time as the course program. The Teatro Villamarta will host the world premieres of Isabel Bayón, Rafaela Carrasco and María del Mar Moreno, as well as the presentation of 'Afectos' by Rocío Molina, 'Naranja amarga' by Leonor Leal and 'Abolengo' by Farruquito, among others. Moreover, recently-created shows will be seen such as 'Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías' by the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, 'La consagración' by Estévez & Paños, 'La otra piel' by Úrsula López and 'Federico según Lorca' by Eva Yerbabuena, among others. At the Sala Compañía and the Sala Paúl, there will be baile, cante and music series which combine the dance of young talents with live shows of albums, guitar concerts and dialogues between maestros and pupils.

“Really balanced”. That is how Festival de Jerez Director Isamay Benavente describes the program. As she explained at the presentation, “the elders are represented, the youths are really on the rise, there are artists there who have opened up roads on other circuits like jazz or rock, there’s the most genuine flamenco dancing and, above all, there’s the strength of creation, which is unstoppable”. The seventeenth edition of this project which, devoted to flamenco dancing and Spanish dance, will turn Jerez (Cádiz, Spain) into a “cultural capital” from February 22nd to March 9th.

The lineup offers 53 shows spread out over two weeks, at the same time as the training program, which is already filled to 80 percent capacity. The festival will be opened with the premiere of 'Las cinco estaciones', a gala which brings together bailaores Blanca del Rey, Marco Flores, Olga Pericet, Laura Rozalén and Mercedes Ruiz. It will be the first of fourteen shows at the Teatro Villamarta, three of which are world premieres: 'Caprichos del tiempo' by Isabel Bayón, 'De cal viva' by María del Mar Moreno and 'Con la música a otra parte' by Rafaela Carrasco. Also to be staged is 'Afectos' by Rocío Molina, 'Naranja amarga' by Leonor Leal and 'Abolengo' by Farruquito. There are recently-premiered productions like 'Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías' by the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, 'La consagración' by Estévez & Paños and 'La otra piel' by Úrsula López, among others. The new shows are joined by the revival of 'Vivencias' by Antonio el Pipa, fifteen years after its creation. And closing the curtain is Eva Yerbabuena, renewing 'Federico según Lorca'.

More venues

The other centers of attention will be at the Sala Compañía, Sala Paúl and Palacio de Villavicencio. These venues are to host thematic series with baile, cante, toque and music. 'De la raíz' includes concerts like those of cantaores Antonio Malena, José Valencia and Vicente Soto 'Sordera', presenting their latest albums. 'De la Frontera' embraces artists whose style is based on crossing flamenco with other genres such as Jorge Pardo with 'Huellas', Tomasito 'En estado puro', Rosario Toledo with the play 'Aleluya erótica' and the Japanese company of Mayumi Kagita and Hiroki Sato, among others. 'Paso a dos. Maestros & jóvenes' has veteran artists dialogue with their students, such as Javier Latorre with Hugo López. Bailaoras like Ángeles Gabaldón, La Truco, Manuela Ríos and María José Franco will express themselves in 'Solos en Compañía: Muy Flamencos'. 'Toca toque Jerez', devoted to today’s Jerez guitar, includes recitals like those of Javier Patino and Santiago Lara. And, in an unplugged version, Melchora Ortega and Ricardo Fernández - winner of the Lámpara Minera 2012 Award at La Unión - will be heard in 'Los conciertos de Palacio'.

This entire program, whose tickets and season tickets will go on sale starting November 27th, will take place at the same time as the course program, which drew over one thousand students from forty countries in its previous edition to the program of parallel activities, which will soon be presented, as well as the growing and growing contribution which local private enterprise makes to the off-festival. Jerez is the flamenco capital during its festival.
