The Festival de Jerez takes tradition and
pushes it in the direction of creativity, modernization, blending and fusion in
this, its seventh edition. The flamenco and Spanish dance event, to be held between
February 27th and March 11th 2003, has drawn up a program where hallowed figures
rub shoulders with rising stars and talented newcomers. Among others the line-up
features performances by Cristina Hoyos, Eva Yerbabuena, Antonio Canales, Manuela
Carrasco, Javier Latorre, Antonio el Pipa, Belén Maya, Sara Baras, Rafael
Amargo and Farruquito. The vocal cante performances can be found this year at
the Museo Taurino, a bullring which will play host to the likes of Guadiana, Diego
Clavel, Segundo Falcón, Juan Villar, Mayte Martín, El Cabrero and
Esperanza Fernández, as well as musicians like Dorantes, Diego Amador and
the familiar trio made up of Carles Benavent, Tino di Geraldo and Jorge Pardo.
Other highlights of the program can be found in the activities running in parallel,
including courses and also the 'Tertulias de la bodega', a series of relaxed,
informal talks.

'Tierra adentro' by Cristina Hoyos, 'Poeta
en Nueva York' by Rafael Amargo, 'La voz del silencio' by Eva Yerbabuena, 'Rinconete
y Cortadillo' by Javier Latorre, 'Mariana Pineda' by Sara Baras... The Festival
de Jerez, organized by Fundación Teatro Villamarta and sponsored by Jerez
City Council, is a showcase of the latest baile flamenco offerings, the common
denominator being a creativity which shows respect for tradition. As well as these
grand shows, there'll be productions like 'Flamenco de cámara' by Mayte
Martín and Belén Maya, 'Dime' by Javier Barón, 'De la tierra'
by Antonio el Pipa, 'Boda flamenca' by Antonio Márquez, 'Setiembre' by
María del Mar Moreno', a dance recital by Farruquito and the pairing of
Antonio Canales with Manuela Carrasco in an evening performance by the name of
'Tierra y fuego'. The event will also flood the Teatro Villamarta with talent,
with 'Dibujos en el aire' by Mercedes Ruiz and 'La música del cuerpo' by
Rafaela Carrasco.
Cante from dusk till dawn
With the exception of Diego Carrasco, who'll
share an evening with Farruco's grandson, the vocal performances have all been
moved from the Alcázar in 2002 and can now be found in the evening performances
at the Bullfighting Museum. The 'Museum concerts' are divided into several thematic
groups, such as 'Gloria Pura' (Sheer glory), featuring Juan Villar and Diego Clavel;
'Flamenquerías', comprising Segundo Falcón, Guadiana and Carmen
Carmona; '¡Viva Jeré!', with Dolores Agujetas, Melchora Ortega and
Elu de Jerez; and 'Bordón y cuenta nueva' (Bourdon and start again), dedicated
to the guitarwork of El Bolita and Paco Serrano. And in the early hours of the
morning, a new feature of the festival will be the 'Café Cantante', which
will see Mayte Martín performing boleros; El Cabrero performing tangos;
Esperanza Fernández and Dorantes; Diego Amador; and the familiar trio comprising
Carles Benavent, Jorge Pardo and Tino di Geraldo. At midnight the city's peñas,
or informal private clubs, will also be alive with flamenco as part of the 'Trasnoches'
(All-nighters), 'De peñas' and 'Peña de guardia' (Night shift) organized
in association with the Local Federation of Peñas Flamencas.
As for activities running in parallel, the
Festival de Jerez's range of courses and workshops goes from strength to strength,
taught in 2003 by first-rate artists including, among others, Matilde Coral, Manolete,
Javier Latorre, Manolo Marín, El Güito, José Granero and Merche
Esmeralda. And then there are the informal talks at the Bodega de San Ginés,
with a chance to see artists in a relaxed, informal environment, and hear about
new projects, forthcoming music and video releases, and new developments in the
world of flamenco.
With this extraordinary program the Festival
de Jerez aims to better the attendance figures at the previous edition: a total
of 16,500 participants in more than 70 activities, meaning on average the event
was filled to 92% of capacity.
