Flamenco dancing and Spanish dance
are committed to creation. And proof of it is the program
of Festival de Jerez 2010, the top international event with
both disciplines. From February 26th to March 13th, 2010,
the Teatro Villamarta and other unique stages in Jerez de
la Frontera (Cádiz, Spain) will offer a select display
of shows in which the stress is on creation. In line with
this are the new shows by Andrés
Marín, Dospormedio and Belén Maya. The
main venue in Jerez also highlights leading male baile figures
such as Antonio Canales, Farruquito, Joaquín Grilo
and Rafael Campallo, and displays large-scale shows like
‘Fedra’ and a new Lorca by the Ballet Flamenco
de Andalucía. Moreover, new baile talents will make
their début before the audience of this prestigious
forum, which combines students from its courses with enthusiasts
of flamenco, dance and the performing arts coming from all
over the world.

The premiere of ‘La pasión
según se mire’ by Andrés Marín;
‘Sonata’ by Dospormedio, the company directed
by Rafael
Estévez and Nani Paños which won the festival’s
Revelation Prize in 2008; and ‘Bailes alegres para
personas tristes’ by Belén
Maya with Olga Pericet as guest artist, are a few of
the shows most committed to creation of many offered by
the bill of Festival de Jerez 2010. And that is just one
of the features of this fourteenth edition of the Jerez
festival which, specializing in flamenco dancing and Spanish
dance, is to be held February 26th to March 13th, 2010.
If women stood out in the previous program,
men do so in this one. Antonio
Canales performs at the Teatro Villamarta together with
Japanese pianist Mie Matsumura in ‘Serenata andaluza’,
Farruquito
with ‘Farruquito esencial’, Joaquín Grilo
with his show ‘Leyenda personal’, Rafael Campallo
with ‘Puente de Triana’, where he has Adela
Campallo as guest artist, and Fernando Romero with ‘Historia
de un soldado’, a show including the collaboration
of Isabel Bayón. But the dose of femininity will
not be missing, coming from the hands of Jerez-born María
del Mar Moreno, who premieres ‘Quiero tu cante’;
from Rafaela Carrasco with ‘Vamos al tiroteo’,
inspired by Lorca and La Argentinita’s ‘Canciones
populares’; and from Cádiz-born María
José Franco with ‘Al compás del
viento’. Nor are large productions left out, such
as ‘Fedra’ starring Lola Greco which was revived
at the last Festival de Mérida; and ‘Poema
del cante jondo en el Café de Chinitas’ by
the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía (Andalusia Flamenco
Ballet), which inaugurates the festival. It will be closed
with a tribute to Jerez-born maestro Fernando Belmonte captured
in the show ‘Reencuentro’, whose artistic director
is Joaquín
Grilo, one of his pupils.

Making the careers known of the most veteran
maestros is the aim of a new series taking place at the
Centro Andaluz de Flamenco (Andalusian Flamenco Center).
‘Con nombre propio: Vivencias’ will star Matilde
Coral, Victoria Eugenia, José Luis Balao, La
Sallago and Silvia Durán. At the other end of the
spectrum, that of new talents, lies the series ‘Los
Novísimos’ which will suppose the ‘début’
in the evenings at the Sala Compañía of bailaores
such as María Canea, Pepe Torres, Karen Lugo, Patricia
Ibáñez and Abel Harana, among others.
Another two series are to be held at the
stage of the old Jesuit church and the Sala Paúl.
One of them is ‘Con nombre propio’, dedicated
to already consolidated bailaoras like La
Farruca and La Truco. And the other is ‘Solos
en Compañía’, with young talents who
already have experience such as Ana Morales, who presents
‘De sandalia a tacón’; Adrián
Sánchez with ‘Por los cuatro costaos’
and Belén López. The rest of the baile will
be provided by the students and instructors in the classrooms
spread throughout the city, taking part in an intense training
program which in this edition consists of 36 courses,
four clapping and compás workshops and two master
classes with nearly one thousand places. For the first time,
samples of that work will be seen on stage, specifically,
pieces from Javier
Latorre’s choreography workshop.

From
traditional cante to flamenco rock
Although
Festival de Jerez’s specialty is baile,
both flamenco cante and music also play a lead
role. The Singing Café series will take
place at La Bodega de Los Apóstoles,
with a splendid bill of traditional cante by
cantaores such as Rancapino, Fernando
Terremoto with Moraíto on guitar,
Mariana Cornejo and David Palomar, Inés
Bacán with Pedro Peña; Juana la
del Pipa, Dolores Agujetas and La Macanita presenting
the album ‘Mujerez’; and providing
the finishing touch, Fernando de la Morena and
El Torta.

There
will also be Jerez-style cante at the Palacio
de Villavicencio, where artists scheduled to
perform include David
Lagos, presenting in acoustic his disc ‘El
espejo en que me miro’; El Londro, Jesús
Méndez and Luis el Zambo, among others.
As a novelty in this fourteenth edition of the
festival, a new venue is to be inaugurated for
late-night music; the Sala Paúl. And
the most eclectic and rock concerts will go
there aimed at the young audience, such as those
of Diego Carrasco with Remedios Amaya as guest
artist, the group Los Delinqüentes with
Tomasito, María Bermúdez’s
Chicana Gypsy Project with Capullo de Jerez
and the group Mixtolobo led by Juan Diego, among
others.
