Following its presentation in Barcelona
and Madrid, Joaquín
Cortés chooses New York for the international
premiere of ‘Calé’. The new show by the
Córdoba-born bailaor is a look back at his artistic
career and includes “the essence” of the six
shows which he has choreographed and directed with his company
in the last two decades. Accompanied by ten dancers and
sixteen musicians on stage, he revises pieces such as the
martinete from ‘Cibayí’, the bulerías
from ‘Mi soledad’, the soleá por bulerías
from ‘Soul’, the jaleos from ‘Pasión
gitana’, the soleá from ‘De amor y de
odio’ and the alegrías from ‘Live’.
The world tour then moves on to Mexico.

New York is getting ready for the return
of Joaquín Cortés. As the posters announce,
the Córdoba-born bailaor hasn’t performed in
the Big Apple for five years. And he is going to do so at
the Beacon Theatre on May 14th, 2009 with his new show ‘Calé’.
That will be the first world premiere of the show, following
four performances which he offered from March 12th to 15th
at the Teatro Tívoli in Barcelona and five at the
Teatro Compac Gran Vía in Madrid from April 1st to
5th.
The new show – whose title means
‘gypsy’ in gypsy dialect – celebrates
his twenty-year career as an artist and is based on a selection
of pieces from the six shows which he has choreographed
and directed so far with his company. The show includes
the instrumental martinete from ‘Cibayí’,
the triple solo choreography por seguiriyas, martinetes
and alegrías from ‘Live’, the group soleá
from ‘De amor y de odio’, and the musical bulería
from ‘Mi soledad’. He also revises the jaleos
from ‘Pasión gitana’ performed by the
star and the dance corps consisting of ten dancers, and
the soleá por bulerías ‘Soul’
heading up the bill, plus the solo requiem and final tangos
by the entire company created for ‘Calé’.

16 musicians on stage
The show’s music is authored by Antonio
Carbonell, José Carbonell ‘Montoyita’
and Joaquín Cortés. It is performed live by
sixteen musicians between cantaores and instrumentalists.
The female voices belong to Genara Cortés, Saray
Muñoz and Chelo Pantoja, and the male voices are
contributed by Antonio Carbonell, Manuel Doya ‘Zambullo’
and David de Motril. The guitars are provided by Montoyita
and José Antonio Camacho ‘Piripi’, while
the band is completed with cello, violin, contrabass, bass,
sax, trumpet and percussions.
The world premiere of ‘Calé’
kicks off with its performance in New York, then to continue
in Mexico. It was precisely in the Aztec country where he
premiered his previous show ‘Mi soledad’ in
2005, with which he has reached thousands of spectators
worldwide over the past few seasons.
