September is the month of harvesting
ripe grapes, the ones which yield the coveted wines of Jerez
after resting in the winery temples. And it is therefore
a time for celebration. The city accompanies the harvest
with a cultural program which has room for flamenco…
and also other types of music. Besides holding Fiesta de
la Bulería 2009, other venues in town turn into stages
for the jondo in all of its senses. One of the star concerts
on the bill is the one which saxophonist Jorge
Pardo and Jerez-born guitarist Juan Diego will
offer at the Plaza de la Asunción on Sunday, September
6th, a face-off between jazz and flamenco. The previous
evening, Pardo will be at the Fnac Forum in Seville to present
his new album, ‘Vientos flamencos 2’.

The concert by Jorge Pardo and Juan Diego,
in which scores are exchanged within the framework of jazz
flamenco, is part of the program to do with flamenco in
Fiestas de la Vendimia 2009. There is room in it for both
the Fiesta de la Bulería on September 5th, in this
edition dedicated to Parrilla de Jerez; and the ‘Voces
flamencas’ series at the Plaza de la Asunción,
with performances by José de la Tomasa, India Martínez
and Vicente Soto from September 17th to 19th. This musical
agenda is also highlighted by outdoor concerts like the
one by Pardo and Juan
Diego, as well as the live presentation of the album
‘Y
de lo mío, ¿qué?’ by Tomasito
on Friday the 11th with Kiko Veneno, Muchachito Bombo Infierno
and Tino di Geraldo as guest artists.

‘Vientos flamencos 2’
at Fnac Sevilla
Before reaching Jerez, Jorge Pardo will
stop off in Seville to present his latest album, ‘Vientos
flamencos 2’. The event is at the Fnac Forum on Saturday,
September 5th at 8 p.m. (free admission until full capacity).
The Madrilenian saxophonist and flutist, accompanied by
guitar and percussion, will perform a selection of pieces
from this disc which includes a tribute to ‘La leyenda
del tiempo’ by Camarón, a revision of classics
such as Albéniz and Falla, glances at the cante of
maestros like El Chaqueta and, of course, scores of his
own. This album is the second installment of a collection
of pieces which Pardo, a forerunner of flamenco jazz and
one of the most international Spanish musicians, is completing
and organizing into folders like ‘Pensamientos’
(‘Thoughts’), ‘Mis palos’ (‘My
Styles’), ‘Solo flauta’ (‘Just Flute’)
and ‘x Camarón’.
