Flamenco-world.com, June 2005
Flamenco is leading the field in
the digital era. Jorge
Pardo is one of the first musicians in the world and
certainly the first of his genre to sell his unpublished
music on the internet. He’s doing so by launching
www.flamencodigital.com,
a space that’s open to creators from the jondo arts
who wish to communicate with the audience “without
a middle-man”. With the technical support of Flamenco-world.com,
pioneer and leading flamenco portal on the net, the new
website sells downloads at a cost of 1 euro each, through
a completely legal and secure system. The project kicks
off with ten songs by Jorge Pardo which form part of six
as-yet undefined albums that will be completed with the
passing of time. Standing out amongst these is the one dedicated
to Camarón, which begins with versions of 'A tu mare
Rosa’ and ‘Vente conmigo’. The saxophonist
and flautist, who was a member of not only the legendary
six piece band headed by Paco de Lucía but also Chick
Corea’s Touchstone group, has surrounded himself for
these recordings by musicians such as Juan Diego, Niño
Josele, Diego Amador and Tino di Geraldo, among others.

Buying previously unreleased flamenco on
the Internet is at last possible. Jorge Pardo has spent
three years working alongside Flamenco-world.com to get
the project they christened www.flamencodigital.com
off the ground. The new website is opening with ten hitherto
unheard of songs by the Madrid-born musician, which can
be downloaded worldwide for only one euro each. The system,
which is entirely secure and legal, works by means of a
credit card purchase (after registering as a new user),
buying a voucher for either ten, four or one downloads,
which the user can then spend as he or she wishes and with
no expiry date.
With time the Jorge Pardo recordings will
come to form part of six albums which “will remain
permanently incomplete, since I will continue to add new
songs as long as both my schedule and inspiration allow
me to”. These ‘folders’ of music are named
‘X Camarón’ (For Camarón), ‘Solo
flauta’ (Solo flute), ‘Mis pensamientos’
(My thoughts), ‘Mis pasodobles’ (My paso dobles),
‘Mis palos’ (My flamenco styles) and ‘Qué
grandes músicos’ (What great musicians), all
presented with accompanying notes written by the artist
himself. The first instalment of ten songs which to be found
on these albums, has been laid down at a number of studios
over the course of three years, with the participation of
renowned flamenco musicians such as guitarists Juan Diego
and Niño Josele, percussionist Tino di Geraldo and
the man of many talents Diego Amador.
The musician maintains that “this
format allows me to record uninterruptedly, that is, without
having to plan the beginning and the end of a CD or LP,
as well allowing me to publish the music in real time, in
other words, whenever I finish a piece. In addition, the
obsession that comes with making a CD is minimized and I
work on the tracks that I really want to without feeling
forced to work to a budget.” He also points out the
advantages of working without an intermediary: “The
absence of a recording company means, OK, you lose the backing,
but on the other hand it also means recovering legal control
of the work for the artists who produce it, as well as maximizing
independence."
Jorge Pardo
www.flamencodigital.com,
to which other artists with new songs will gradually be
added, was created with the aim of “serving as a platform
to allow flamenco musicians direct access to international
audiences without having to depend on the music industry
and the distribution of a physical product”. It also
sets out to “serve as a stimulus for independent creativity”.
Technical support for the new website is provided by Flamenco-world.com,
an information, sales and online services website, leader
and pioneer on the internet. It’s currently visited
by half a million readers a month, with seventy thousand
subscribers worldwide.
