Jorge Pardo is awarded the prestigious 2004 Golden Indalo
by the Almerian town of Mojácar
Flamenco-world.com, January 2004
Each year the beautiful Spanish town of
Mojácar, on the sun-drenched Almeria coastline, awards the 'Indalo de Oro'
to "those groups or persons whose presence, work, ideas and projects are
judged by the townspeople as having contributed to improving people's perception
of the town and its surroundings." And, in 2004, the award goes to flamenco
jazz musician Jorge
Pardo. The award, in the form of the prehistoric archer who is both a good
luck charm and the symbol of the city, will be presented on January 30th 2004
at the Mojácar stand of Madrid's FITUR Tourism Exhibition.

Flamenco artists like Ketama and Pepe Habichuela,
actors such as Verónica Forqué and José Luis López
Vázquez, journalists like Pedro Piqueras and Carlos Herrera, and organizations
such as Spain's network of stately Hotel-Paradors, as well as magazines like 'Geo',
have all been awarded the magical symbol in the past. And now Jorge Pardo joins
the list for his constant wanderings, sax-in-hand, through this beautiful part
of southern Spain. The awards committee summed up the reasons for the jury's decision
as follows: "his frequent visits to our corner of Spain, and the warmth he
always shows us, as well as for his artistic achievements, of which we are all
in awe."
Over the last few years this town, perched
on a rock overlooking the bay, has become a regular stomping ground for the saxophonist.
And it's also become a source of inspiration and a place where his creations are
hatched. In fact the album '2332' revolves around improvisations he recorded in
Mojácar. And the disc 'Las cigarras son quizás sordas' features
a track entitled 'From San José to Mojácar', providing further evidence
for the musician's ties to the city.
Jorge Pardo, who is delighted with the honor
of receiving the award, will be presented with the 'Indalo de Oro 2004' at a ceremony
to be held at the Mojácar stand (stand 105) of the Feria Internacional
de Turismo (FITUR). This event takes place at Madrid's Ifema exhibition center
on January 30th 2004 at 1:30pm.
