Jorge Pardo and El Bola join forces
on the flamenco jazz album ‘Desvaríos’
Flamenco-world.com, June 2007
Flamenco lays its stakes on collaboration
projects. Saxophonist Jorge
Pardo and guitarist Agustín Carbonell ‘El
Bola’ have united not just their instruments but
also what flamenco and jazz have in common on the album
‘Desvaríos’.
The recording, assigned by the label RTVE Música
for its collection ‘Jazz en España’,
was done in March 2007 at the studios of Televisión
Española. Piano, contrabass, violin, percussion,
clapping and cante accompany the two soloists.

Along the lines of duo-type albums such
as ‘Sumando’ by Carles Benavent and Josemi
Carmona, now coming out is the project ‘Desvaríos’
by Jorge Pardo and Agustín
Carbonell ‘El Bola’. The album joins the
work of the saxophonist and the guitarist on common ground
within the world of flamenco jazz, thus solidifying the
mutual collaboration which they had previously captured
in their respective discographies. If Jorge Pardo was
the Madrilenian tocaor’s special collaborator on
‘Alegrías de Cascorro’, El Bola did
the same on the album ‘2332’ by the renowned
jazz player.
Each of the soloists contributes compositions
of his own. Songs such as ‘Manos al aire’
in 5x4 time, the tango ‘Pañí/H2O’,
‘Tangos del Rastro’ and the granaína
‘Vacíos’ have been written by El Bola.
The rumba ‘El faro’, the flute solo ‘Desvaríos
orbitales’ and the tanguillos ‘Qué
movida’ are the work of Jorge Pardo, one of the
great names in this hybrid genre which is flamenco jazz.
And they perform them together with other
instrumentalists like pianist Sergio Ceballos, contrabass
players Juan Miguel Guzmán and José Miguel
Garzón, violinist José Gregorio Lovera,
Paco Vega on percussions, Sergio Ceballos on clapping
and Enrique Bermúdez ‘El Piculabe’
on cante. ‘Desvaríos’ is the fifth
installment of RTVE Música’s ‘Jazz
en España’ Collection, which already has
titles connecting flamenco and jazz such as ‘Acércate
más’ by Chano
Domínguez.
