Marina Heredia and Pepe Habichuela, side by side. That’s how Seville’s 2008/2009 Flamenco Thursdays season opens on October 23rd, with the premiere of the show ‘De Graná’ starring the Granada-born cantaora and guitarist. In total, the bill includes twenty-five nights of live cante, baile, toque and music taking place at Fundación Cajasol’s headquarters in Seville. It will go on until May 21st, when Dorantes closes it by presenting his new album in concert.

“I wanted to do a pure concert, to go back to the roots. Without any adornments or tricks. Where the vocals and guitar were the only stars”. Marina Heredia takes a look back. And she does so accompanied by a guitar of reference; that of veteran maestro Pepe Habichuela. Together at Seville’s 2008/2009 Flamenco Thursdays, they premiere a classical-style show which they have come to call ‘De Graná’. As the Granada-born cantaora explains, “I know it’s risky, but I think I owe it to flamenco”.

To her, ‘De Graná’ is “like opening my memory chest, going back to what I’ve listened to since I was little in my hometown of Albaicín and returning all that it has taught me to it”. Soleares, alegrías and tangos are just some of the styles she performs together with Pepe Habichuela, which to the cantaora “is a luxury and an honor”. In her view, the guitarist “is one of the maestros who has best taught flamenco to the youths of my generation. He’s from Granada, like me. He knows the touches of our land better than anyone and at the same time, he’s one of the most modern flamencos I know”.

Once it has kicked things off with ‘De Graná’, the series organized by Fundación Cajasol at the Sala Joaquín Turina of its headquarters in Seville will offer a total of twenty-five concerts up until May 21st of next year. The offer covers every facet of flamenco. Baile will be represented by artists such as Joaquín Grilo with the show ‘Leyenda personal’; Dospormedio, a company directed by Rafael Estévez and Nani Paños, which will premiere ‘Sonatas’; and Carrete de Málaga with ‘Evocación de El Perchel’, among others.

The weight of guitar is split up between great figures such as Tomatito, veterans as international as Paco Peña and rising youths like Daniel Casares, presenting his album ‘Caballero’. Aurora Vargas, José Valencia, Manuel Moneo and Juan Villar are among the cantaores called upon in this ninth edition of Seville’s flamenco series, which will be closed by Dorantes with the presentation of what will be his third solo album.
