It isn’t a festival, but the abundance of flamenco on different single stages in Seville has led to the creation of a common bill. Junio Flamenco 2009 will be headed up by cantaor Miguel Poveda’s premiere of his new album ‘Coplas del querer’ at the Teatro Lope de Vega. But there is also room for new talents in the 9th Larachí Flamenca Series of the Peña Torres Macarena, for recognized cantaores like Capullo de Jerez at the 34th La Fragua del Cortijo del Cuarto Flamenco Festival, to do a live presentation of the album ‘Nueva Frontera del Cante de Jerez’ at Alameda de Hércules and to pay tribute to Morón’s flamenco at Seville’s 5th Monasterio de la Cartuja Flamenco Festival.

Alameda de Hércules, Teatro Lope de Vega, Cortijo del Cuarto, Peña Torres Macarena and Patio del Monasterio de la Cartuja are the Sevillian stages where Junio Flamenco 2009 will be held. The program, promoted by the Bienal, gathers different series, recitals and festivals which, in general, stress cante. The first of the activities is reserved for Miguel Poveda, who premieres his album ‘Coplas del querer’ on June 9th and 10th at the Teatro Lope de Vega. And it is precisely the Catalan cantaor who closes the bill with his cante recital accompanied on guitar by Chicuelo at the 5th Seville Flamenco Festival, which is to be held on June 25th at the Patio del Monasterio de la Cartuja (La Cartuja Monastery Courtyard). He shares the night with several artists gathered under the slogan ‘Al aire de Morón’ (‘With a Morón Air’), among others, Paco del Gastor, Paco de Amparo, El Funi and Moi de Morón.

And between events, young talents will take the floor. Some will do so in the ninth edition of the Larachí Flamenca Series, which will be held on the nights of June 10th, 17th and 24th at the unique Peña Torres Macarena. Bailaores such as El Choro and María Moreno, cantaores like Javier Rivera, Miguel Rosendo and Alicia Acuña, as well as guitarists like Juan Campallo and Raúl Cantizano, among others, shape up a festival which will travel to the House of World Cultures in Paris in the month of November.

And others will do so at Alameda de Hércules itself. On June 20th, the flamenco square will host the live presentation of the album ‘La Nueva Frontera del Cante de Jerez’. The show with free admission, which is part of the BBK Flamenco Series, will have artists such as Ezequiel Benítez, Jesús Méndez, El Tolo, El Quini and Luis de Pacote, among others. And the next day at the same venue, coinciding with Music Day, the 6th Young Flamencos Festival will take place with the participation of Gastor de Paco on guitar, Manuela Cordero on cante and La Piñona on baile, among others.

Occupying an outstanding place in Seville’s Junio Flamenco 2009 is the veteran La Fragua Flamenco Festival, which holds its thirty-fourth edition on June 19th at the Patio del Cortijo del Cuarto in Bellavista. Artists will perform there such as guitarist Manuel Herrera, cantaor Guillermo Cano and bailaora Lalo Tejada, with Jerez-born cantaor Capullo de Jerez as the main attraction.
