El Lebrijano reveals unreleased cante by La Niña de los Peines on the album ‘La boda’

Mairena and Pepe Pinto sing in the recording of the wedding’s flamenco fiesta

Flamenco-world.com, April 2011

There are still some well-kept secrets in flamenco. And every now and then, they are revealed. Juan Peña ‘El Lebrijano’ had stashed away the recording of the flamenco fiesta held at his wedding, way back in 1964. Nearly half a century later, the cantaor has decided to share it. The audio comes out for the first time gathered on an album entitled ‘La boda’, which is released in the framework of the institutional program Flamenco and University. And the value of the recording lies in the unprecedented nature of the cantes it includes, performed by none other than the now historic La Niña de los Peines and Pepe Pinto, by influential maestro Antonio Mairena, by mother cantaora María la Perrata and by an emerging Lebrijano, accompanied on guitar by Pedro Peña. The contents, over an hour long, are structured in twenty-two tracks which follow one another like a tale which begins when ‘Lebrijano llama a la fiesta’ (‘Lebrijano calls for the fiesta’) and ends when ‘Y al amanecer el día… canta La Perrata’ (‘La Perrata sings... at dawn’).
