Like in New York, Estrella Morente’s
voice will also inaugurate Flamenco Festival London 2009.
But the upcoming edition of this flamenco event, scheduled
for March 14th to 29th at Sadler’s Wells, clearly
leans towards baile. ‘Mujeres’ by Merche Esmeralda,
Rocío Molina and Belén Maya, ‘Oro viejo’
by Rocío Molina, ‘Carmen’ by the Antonio
Gades Company, Eva Yerbabuena and ‘Sevilla-Madrid-Sevilla’
by the Ballet Nacional de España are on the bill.
Following the performance by the Granada-born
cantaora on Saturday, March 14th, the lineup offers two
nights of revival of the gala ‘Mujeres’, the
show directed by Mario Maya which was already staged in
the past edition. Bailaoras Merche Esmeralda, Belén
Maya and Rocío Molina are the stars. The most
novel proposal is on Tuesday the 17th with ‘Oro viejo’
by the young Málaga-born bailaora Rocío Molina
solo, which has just been successfully premiered at Bienal
de Flamenco de Sevilla 2008.
The company keeping alive the legacy of
dancer and choreographer Antonio Gades recovers his acclaimed
show ‘Carmen’ from Thursday the 19th to Sunday
the 22nd. Starring dancers Adrián Galia and Stella
Arauzo, it stages the theater version done in 1983, parallel
to the film version directed by Carlos Saura. The shows
by Farruquito from March 23rd to 25th have been canceled,
as the theater has announced, and have been replaced by
Eva
Yerbabuena Ballet Flamenco.
And the final touch is to be provided by
the Ballet Nacional de España with ‘Sevilla-Madrid-Sevilla’
from March 27th to 29th. The show, premiered in Madrid in
March 2007, juxtaposes three choreographic works: ‘Caprichos’
by Fernando Romero, ‘Dualia’ by Ángel
Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez, and ‘Cambalache’
by Antonio
Canales.
