It was four years that recording studios
had been feeling the absence of Tomasa Guerrero, La Macanita. The singer from
Jerez is now presenting her fifth solo work with musical arrangements by Isidro
Sanlúcar. With the title 'La Luna de Tomasa' on the Senador label 'Flamenco
y Duende', the singer has chosen to fill out the record not only with bulerías,
but also alegrías, siguiriyas, tangos and soleares. Guitarist Moraíto
and percussionist Tino di Geraldo also take part.
La Macanita
"¡Venga Tomasa! La luna ha salío
y pregunta por ti, dice que le cantes, que no quiere irse de Jerez sin oírte,
chiquilla". ['Come on Tomasa, the moon's out and looking for you, saying
you should sing, says he won't leave Jerez until he hears you sing girl']. And
Tomasa answered that demand reflected in the accompanying booklet by José
Luis Ortiz Nuevo, with a new record, her 'moon', "La luna de Tomasa".
It was 1998 when La Macanita released her last recording on the Nuevo Medios Label,
"Jerez. Xèrez. Sherry'. And that came after a string of recordings
which included "Cariño ida y vuelta" (Serdisc, 1992), "Con
el alma" (Auvidis, 1995) and "A la luna nueva" (DRO, 1996).
The record just presented by the singer
from Jerez is once again based on bulerías, the form which rounds out four
other cantes, although the idea is to offer a variety of styles. To be exact,
tangos, rumba and alegrías in the festero line, and soleá and siguiriyas
in the area of 'jondo' singing comprise the rest of the recording.
The songs from this, the singer's fifth record,
were composed by Isidro Sanlúcar whose long list of recent flamenco collaborations
includes work with José Mercé and Duquende. The guitar which accompanies
La Macanita is that of her fellow-Jerezano Moraíto who took part in the
previous recordings and here satisfies an urge to write verses by supplying some
bulerías lyrics. Tino di Geraldo is in charge of the percussion and Chícharo,
Gregorio and El Bo also participate on the record
