Málaga bends over backwards
for flamenco. The capital of the Andalusian Costa del Sol
wants to ‘compete’ with Seville by organizing
another great biannual festival that combines the genre's
leading figures with local artists. Málaga in Flamenco
is to hold its first edition from September 14th to November
12th, 2005 on several stages in the capital and the surrounding
province of Málaga. Paco
de Lucía shines on a bill which will be inaugurated
by Málaga-born artists grouped together in a show
directed by choreographer and bailaor Paco Mora. Carmen
Linares, Mayte Martín, José Mercé,
Antonio el Pipa, Andalusia Flamenco Ballet are some of the
names which shape up the program.

On September 14th, the Cervantes Theater
will be the setting for the performance of an abundant group
of Málaga-born artists to inaugurate the new biannual
Málaga in Flamenco Festival. Directed by choreographer
and bailaor Paco
Mora, La Cañeta, Antoñita Contreras, Rocío
Bazán and Bonela, among others, are scheduled to
perform on the opening day.
The next main event is the performance
by Paco de Lucía at La Malagueta Bullring on September
17th. And after that, a bill begins which is highlighted
by names such as Carmen
Linares, Mayte Martín, José Mercé,
Antonio el Pipa, Andalusia Flamenco Ballet...
The festival, organized by Málaga
County Council, will have different sub-locations throughout
the province of Málaga. The shows will travel to
towns like Álora, Ronda, Antequera, Vélez-Málaga,
Mijas and Torremolinos, among other places.
On July 11th, the organizers confirmed
the budget for the festival. In total, Málaga County
Council and the Andalusia Junta will contribute a budget
of two million euros, to schedule around one hundred performances.
Some of them will be productions put together expressly
for the festival, which according to the organization, will
be ‘exported’ to the other Andalusian provinces.
