The third edition of Marbella's World Flamenco
Festival, an event included within the Selected Hotels Golf Festival, concentrates
in three days - December 26th, 27th and 28th, 2003 - the idiosyncrasy of three
flamenco territories: Jerez, Utrera and Lebrija. Moraíto, Luis el Zambo
and Antonio el Pipa, on the Jerez side; and Rafael de Utrera and El Lebrijano,
on behalf of the countryside, will take care of displaying it. Likewise, Gerardo
Núñez is going to preview his upcoming album on stage at Hotel
Don Miguel, besides offering night shows of flamenco jazz. Carmen Cortés,
for her part, will present her new show 'También muere el mar' ('The Sea
Also Dies'). The bill of performances is completed with a program of related activities
with lectures, training courses and exhibits.

The date with flamenco which Marbella has
set forward for the past three Christmases is to be inaugurated on Friday, December
26th, 2003 with an intense agenda. Following the presentation of the English-language
version of the Andalusia Flamenco Guide, published by the public company Andalusian
Tourism, co-sponsor of the festival, the baile, guitar and cante master classes
will start, handled by Carmen
Cortés, Gerardo Núñez and El Lebrijano, respectively.
The percussion course by Cepillo and that
of sevillanas by Solera de Jerez will also begin. Afterwards, Andalusian radio
and television broadcaster Manuel Curao will give a lecture on the styles of cante
flamenco. Upon its conclusion, the festival's first show will take place, entitled
'Jerez. The Search for Roots'. Participating in this collective recital will be
Moraíto, Luis el Zambo, Fernando de la Morena, Antonio
el Pipa and palmeros Chícharo, Gregorio and Bo. The show's finale will
be a typical Jerez zambomba. Lastly, around midnight, Gerardo Núñez
will offer the first jazz and flamenco show.
On Saturday, December 27th, when the courses
finish, writer José Manuel Gamboa will give an illustrated lecture on flamenco
guitar. This event will be complemented by the performance of Gerardo Núñez,
who will play songs from his upcoming album. The Jerez-born guitarist and composer
will share the stage that night with bailaora and choreographer Carmen Cortés,
who will perform her latest show 'También muere el mar', inspired in the
poets of the Generation of '27. The day will conclude with the second jazz and
flamenco show.

The festival will put on the finishing touches
on Sunday, December 28th with El
Lebrijano as the star. Cantaor Juan Peña will present his new album
at Hotel Don Miguel and later that night will become the main figure in a show
called 'The Rhythm of Utrera and Lebrija', in which cantaor Rafael de Utrera,
bailaor Rafael de Carmen, guitarist Daniel Méndez and violinist Bernardo
Parrilla are also scheduled to take part. Between events, the final class of each
course will be held and critic Manuel Bohórquez will give an illustrated
lecture on the centennial of the birth of cantaor Pepe Marchena. Marbella's third
festival will close with the communion between jazz and flamenco orchestrated
by Gerardo Núñez.
Golf fans gathered at this hotel complex by
the chain Selected Hotels will be able to follow the trail of flamenco by means
of other artistic expressions. From December 22nd to 31st, a flamenco fashion
exhibit, photo and art exhibits as well as a workshop on how to make hand-made
guitars are all scheduled.
Marbella's World Flamenco Festival originated
in 2001 at the initiative of the local group Solera de Jerez. In 2002, Selected
Hotels and Andalusian Tourism took control of the festival, with an edition taking
place at Hotel Don Miguel from December 27th to 31st, as a cultural section of
the Selected Hotels Golf Festival, with a selection of the artists triumphing
at Seville's 12th Bienal de Flamenco; among others, Manuela Carrasco, Antonio
Canales, Dorantes and Gerardo Núñez.
