Although it already premiered in
Tokyo last May, María
Pagés wants the presentation of her new show
to take place in the city which inspires it and it is named
after. ‘Sevilla’ is to be presented at the Teatro
de la Maestranza on December 27th and 28th, 2006, in the
setting of the Festival Iberoamericano Sevilla entre Culturas.
Taking part in the show are the sixteen bailaores from her
company, plus six musicians between cantaores, guitarists,
cello and percussion.

‘Sevilla’ is a return to the
origins for María Pagés. The Sevillian bailaora
and choreographer writes that “after my long journey
through experimentation, through research, and facing the
new challenge involved in every creation, I needed to go
back to the start of the adventure: go back to the roots,
go back to my childhood, go back to... Seville, the mother
of all my adventures both on and off stage”.
In order to make the project materialize,
she worked side by side with film, theater and television
director José María Sánchez - the artist’s
husband, who died last June -, who tackled directing the
show, besides sharing the idea and script with María
Pagés, and the lighting with Dominique You. The choreography
is taken care of by María Pagés and Christian
Olivares completes the technical crew in stage design and
wardrobe.
As usual in the creations by the Sevillian
artist, the music is very eclectic. It brings together pieces
by Shostakovich, Sarasate, Bizet and Carlos Gardel, as well
as by flamenco guitarists José Carrillo ‘Fyty’
and Rubén Lebaniegos. On baile, accompanying the
star are the eight bailaoras and eight bailaores who are
standing members of the company, founded in 1990 with the
show ‘Sol y sombra’.
