María Pagés and Dorantes put the flamenco touch on the 2003 Marseilles Festival

Flamenco-world.com

The Marseilles Festival is fully aware of all aspects of creativity, including flamenco. In its eighth edition, the French festival has chosen María Pagés and Dorantes as examples of "transdisciplinary" and "eclectic" flamenco. The company of the Sevillian bailaora, winner of the 2002 National Dance Prize, will stage the shows 'Flamenco Republic' and 'El perro andaluz. Burlerías' at La Vieille Charité, while the Lebrija-born pianist will perform the repertoire from his albums, accompanied by cantaora Esperanza Fernández.

They have, paraphrasing English playwright Howard Becker, "the power of imagination". And so reveals the Marseilles Festival, which gathers artists of all disciplines, genres and styles on several stages in the French city from July 2nd to 20th, 2003. Along with dance creators like Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker; theater creators like Triptyque Copi; musical theater creators like Robert Wilson; and music creators like Hasna el Becharia and Tribulations Electroniques; the festival's bill finds a place for two artists representative of flamenco innovation: María Pagés and Dorantes.

At La Vieille Charité on Saturday, July 5th, the María Pagés Company will perform the shows 'Flamenco Republic' and 'El perro andaluz. Burlerías', "two perfect examples of the iconoclastic style of María Pagés, the queen of contemporary flamenco", as explained in the festival program.

The following night, on the same stage, Dorantes will perform together with Esperanza Fernández -as they already did in the last Jerez Festival - songs from 'Orobroy', 'Sur' and 'Esperanza Fernández'. The compositions of the pianist from the Pinini family, according to their presentation on the bill in Marseilles, "link the fire of his flamenco heritage with the dreams kindled by his jazz piano".

The Marseilles Festival, founded in 1996 by Apolline Quintrand, has already had flamenco artists "whose creations know no bounds" in previous editions such as Joaquín Cortés, Joaquín Grilo, Javier Barón, Vicente Amigo, La Macanita, Eva Yerbabuena, Mayte Martín, Carmen Linares, Miguel Poveda, Israel Galván and Duquende.
