'Del Amanecer', 'Aire' and 'Lío' make up the album trilogy which has boosted José Mercé to the top of cante flamenco. And that is shown by 'Lo mejor de José Mercé' ('The Best of José Mercé'), a new DVD released by the label Virgin which includes lives concerts each at Madrid's Royal Theater and Jerez's Villamarta Theater, the video of the single 'Lío' and a biographical documentary sprinkled with confessions by the artist himself.

Young José Mercé

José Mercé in his hometown in Jerez

From the humble home in Jerez's Santiago district where he was raised to his triumphant show at Madrid's Royal Theater... The DVD 'Lo mejor de José Mercé' reviews the cantaor's vital artistic career, stressing its latest stage, the record triangle which contains the magic formula of understandable flamenco: 'Del Amanecer' (1998), 'Aire' (2000) and 'Lío' (2002).

The DVD's menu offers several sections. On the one hand, a documentary entitled 'Un cantaor de época' ('A vintage cantaor') exposes José Mercé's biography by means of a journey he himself takes to the places of his childhood, fragments of live performances, cuts from an unreleased interview and even pictures from the family photo album. On the other hand, two live performances are included: one with the album 'Aire' at Madrid's Royal Theater; and the other with 'Lío' at Jerez's Villamarta Theater. Both concerts amount to more than an hour of live cante by José Mercé, accompanied by musicians like Moraíto Chico, Diego de Morao, Cañizares and Tino di Geraldo, among others.

The DVD is completed with the video of the single 'Lío', a cut in black and white which relates the cantaor to love and daily life por bulerías; and a directory with the discography that he has recorded with the company Virgin since 1998 under the direction of Vicente Amigo and Isidro Muñoz as producers.
