A change in image and in concept.
The 2010 Mont de Marsan Flamenco Festival not only dons
a new bill design, but also moves its center of attention.
The Café Cantante (Singing Café), located
at the indoor market, will be the headquarters of this twenty-second
edition, with the idea of making every citizen take part
in the festival. Most of the performances are concentrated
at this venue where the public and the festive ambience
are first and foremost, twin bills of cante and baile with
proposals for all tastes: from Angelita Vargas to Arcángel,
from Moraíto to Andrés Marín, from
Paco Jarana to Juana Amaya… Another novelty is the
OFF Festival, which gets the city’s bars involved
late night in bringing flamenco to the young crowd. Now
then, the inauguration, as always, will be a large-scale
show at the Espace François Mitterrand, with ‘La
difícil sencillez’ by Rafael Amargo.
More participative and more current. Thus
will be the 2010 Mont de Marsan Flamenco Festival, which
holds its twenty-second edition in the capital of the French
region of The Landes from July 5th to 9th. The program opens
at the Espace François Mitterrand with Rafael
Amargo’s show ‘La difícil sencillez’,
based on ‘Teoría del duende’ by Federico
García Lorca. And it will be the only time the auditorium
opens during this edition, yielding all the spotlight to
the Café Cantante at the Place St. Roch and to other
downtown venues, including the Esplanade du Midou for the
street shows by Felipe Mato and El Torombo, the Théâtre
Municipal for the children’s show ‘Flamenco
Land’ by Laura Vital, the Bodega de la Place de la
Mairie for free shows by local artists and bars for the
OFF Festival.
The first evening at the Café Cantante,
on Tuesday, July 6th, is shared by the recitals ‘En
el Bar Iberia’ by Segundo Falcón and Paco Jarana,
and ‘Amaya’ by bailaora Juana Amaya. On stage
the following night will be first, Jairo Barrull and his
guest artist Angelita Vargas with ‘Dos ramas’,
and second, cantaor Arcángel with ‘Puro y jondo’.
And on Thursday, July 8th, a twin bill of contrasts with
‘Al son de Moraíto’ by Moraíto
Chico and La Macanita, and ‘Vanguardia jonda’
by ground-breaking bailaor Andrés Marín. On
the last night, the proposal is a dinner-show with the recital
‘Flamenco ecológico’ by Belén
López and Gabriel de la Tomasa. Then the grand finale
is to be held on the banks of the river, at the Berges de
la Midouze, with performances by José Valencia and
Eugenio Iglesias, among others.
In the complementary activities
section, the festival strengthens its training offer with
baile, guitar, box drum, compás and clapping courses
organized by Taller
Flamenco. It also stresses visual arts with the photo
exhibit ‘Prohibido el cante’ at the Musée
Despiau Wlérick and by welcoming Swiss photographer
Peter Knapp as a resident during the festival, whose work
will be exhibited in the following edition. In fact, the
festival’s bill has been created by the National Superior
School of Decorative Arts of France, which held a project
contest among its students in which Amélie Fontaine,
author of the poster, was chosen.
