Mexico stakes its claim to
a place on the flamenco map, with a following that's
built up over more than fifty years. Between 8th and
16th October the city of Monterrey plays host to its
seventh Festival de Arte Flamenco. Bailaores
Joaquín Grilo and Pastora Galván, along
with cantaora Carmen Grilo, will head the bill at the
event, which will also make room for Mexican flamenco
artists. The festival was launched in 1998, driven by
the initiative of local fans and backed by the Nuevo
León Council for Arts and Culture, with a common
mission to promote flamenco vocals, dance and guitar
Up to now, the festival has already welcomed bailaor
Rafael Campallo, guitarist Miguel Ángel Cortés,
bailaor Mario Maya, the Ballet de Luisillo, bailaor
Andrés Marín and veteran bailaor Manolo
Marín in his capacity as a teacher. Also involved
in organizing the flamenco event are the Monterrey Metropolitan
Museum, the city of Monterrey, the city of San Pedro,
the Plaza Fátima cultural center in San Pedro,
Peña Flamenca 'Naranjito' from Triana and the
Cristina Heeren Foundation for the Flamenco Arts in
Seville.
