Two hundred years of “La Pepa”. Two hundred years of Spanish dance. The bicentennial celebration of Spain’s first Constitution also reveals the era’s cultural context. And stemming from it is the show 'Mudanzas boleras 1812-2012', which premieres with a five-performance tour at the Teatro Cánovas in Málaga (January 21st and 22nd), Festival de Jerez (March 5th) and the Teatro Alhambra in Granada (April 14th and 15th). The show, with an original idea and artistic directing by Sharon Sapienza, has a creative crew with Rocío Coral as its consultant, Francisco Velasco as its choreographer, Agustín Diassera and Paco Cruzado as music composers, and Sylvie Nys in the theater directing and the script, which she has written together with researcher Juan Vergillos. The repertoire covers ten pieces, among them, 'Soleares de Arcas', 'Olé de la Curra' and 'Jaleo de Jerez'.

‘Mudanzas boleras’ is defined as “a journey in time. A show full of rhythm which leads us to discover the essence of the Bolero School and invites us to get to know its music and its original choreographies in a respectful, lively and current way”. The show “reflects the evolution of baile, stopping off at three hugely significant dates in the history of Spanish dance and public life: 1812, 1912 and 2012. The first theaters in Cádiz and the birth of the cachucha, the shaping of the bolero repertoire by the Pericets, as well as the development of dance up until our times”, according to the synopsis.

The characters who make that journey are Francisco Velasco as “El Romancero”, Penélope Sánchez as “Maestra de baile La Campanera”, Elena Miño as “La Maja”, Daniel Morillo as “El Torero”, Myriam Manso as “La Francesa” and Sergio Bernal as “El Majo”. With choreographies designed by Velasco based on the originals, they perform ‘Panadero de la Flamenca’, ‘Soleares de Arcas’, ‘Sevillanas Boleras’, ‘Jaleo de Jerez’, ‘Ole de La Curra’, ‘El Vito’, ‘El Zapateado de María Cristina’, ‘La Maja y El Torero’, ‘Bolero Liso’ and ‘Boleras de La Cachucha’.

The show comes from the original idea by Sharon Sapienza, also artistic director of the production. The creative team includes Rocío Coral as consultant of artistic, music and choreographic directing. The theater directing is by Sylvie Nys, who shares the script with Juan Vergillos, also in charge of the research and documentation. Olga García takes care of the lighting design, Carmen de Giles does the wardrobe and Rafael Sánchez is in charge of sound. The music has been composed by percussionist Agustín Diassera and guitarist Paco Cruzado, who moreover play their respective instruments in the recording together with pianist Héctor Pérez (also author of the string arrangement), cellist José Carlos Roca, acoustic and electric guitarist Álvaro Girón, flutist Manuel Mogeda, bandoneonist Luis Caruana and marimba Juan Antonio Delgado.

The premiere tour includes five performances at three Andalusian theaters.
