Three flamenco shows make up the bill of 'Flamenco
en janvier 2003'. The first, titled 'Juerga & seis flamencos', has Diego el
Cigala on center stage. At the Odeon Theater on Thursday, January 23rd, the Madrid-born
cantaor will get down to a repertoire contained in his latest records: 'Corren
tiempos de alegría' and 'Diego el Cigala con Niño Josele en el Teatro
Real'. The second, at the Nîmes Theater on the following day with the title
'El compás de Jerez de la Frontera' and the artistic direction of Diego
Carrasco, brings together cantaores such as La Macanita and Capullo de Jerez with
guitarists of the likes of Diego de Morao; and Tomasito.
The third and final day of the series will
take place at the same stage on Saturday the 25th with Antonio Canales. The Sevillian
bailaor travels to the city in the south of France with 'Bailaor', a show premiering
at Seville's Bienal de Flamenco 2000 which was also present in the last edition
of the French festival of Mont
de Marsan.
Théâtres de Nîmes
has been organizing annual flamenco festivals for thirteen years. Between 1990
and 1996, the association held a flamenco week each season. After that, the flamenco
program became concentrated into an annual three-day bill. In this time the most
select flamenco artists of the moment have come to Nîmes, a city which is
also very big on bullfighting.
