Festival Flamenco de
Nîmes 2008. Complete program
Maestros y jóvenes estrellas’
(‘Maestros and Young Stars’). The program
of the 2008 Nîmes Flamenco Festival is presented
with this slogan. In this edition, which is to be held
at the theater of the French city from January 17th to
27th, 2008, veteran maestros such as Chano Lobato and
Fosforito coexist with young talents of the likes of Miguel
Poveda, Rocío Molina, David Palomar and Marcos
Flores. Moreover, it lays stakes on concert guitar, by
Córdoba-born José Antonio Rodríguez.
The show schedule is completed with children’s activities,
workshops, lectures, and as a novelty, an evening acoustic
concert.

“Borders, dogmas and biases don’t
matter to flamenco because it’s always in motion.
The 2008 edition of the Nîmes Festival continues
the journey and the exploration of this art form”.
With this statement of intentions, the festival announces
an upcoming bill marked by contrasts. The greatest one
of all is the one proposed for the closing gala on Saturday,
January 26th, shared between veteran cantaor Chano Lobato
and young Málaga-born bailaora Rocío Molina.
The Cádiz-born maestro, together with Fosforito,
Curro Fernández and José Galván,
among others, will take part in a gala on Thursday, January
24th, which will pay tribute to cantaor Pepe Linares,
after having settled down in Nîmes for forty years.
Flamenco’s youngest generation
stars in the rest of the program. Wednesday, January 23rd
is dedicated to the winners of the latest National Flamenco
Art Contest of Córdoba 2007, cantaor David Palomar
and bailaor Marcos Flores, who will perform at the Odéon.
And they will do so one day after this edition of the
festival is inaugurated by Córdoba-born guitarist
José Antonio Rodríguez presenting in a quartet
his latest album, ‘... en el tiempo’. Cantaor
Rafael de Utrera, guitarist Francisco Gallardo and percussionist
Agustín Díassera will be his accompanists.
As a symbol of the vitality of today’s cante, Miguel
Poveda will offer the repertoire of ‘Tierra de calma’
at the Théâtre on Friday, January 25th, with
Chicuelo on guitar and troubadour Diego Carrasco as special
guest.

The festival, which will also be amply
represented by French artists, premieres a new venue in
this edition for acoustic concerts; the Palacio de Justicia.
Cantaor Paco Santiago and guitarist José el Boleco
will perform there on the evening of Saturday, January
26th. The bill is complemented with the children’s
show ‘El flamenco en cuatro estaciones’ by
Silvia Marín, lectures, film showings and dance
courses.
