Cancer overcomes
José Antonio Galicia. The Madrilenian percussionist
and composer died in Ibiza on the night of September
28th, 2003 at the age of 54, after four years of struggle
with the disease. Flamenco-world.com offers, as a sort
of obituary, the musician's very words, included in
an interview held just a few weeks ago. Soon to be published
is the photo gallery of the tribute paid to him by his
fellow jazz and flamenco artists on September 2nd, 2003
at Madrid's Cuartel del Conde Duque, an evening of encounters
and musical comradeship which turned out to be his farewell.

José Antonio Galicia, percussionist and composer
Tomatito performs
at London's Royal Albert Hall. The Almería-born
guitarist will offer a concert on the legendary stage
in London on Monday, October 6th, 2003. Following
a five-year absence in the United Kingdom, Tomatito
will present the concert 'Paseo de los Castaños'.
He will be accompanied by Potito on cante, Bernardo
Parrilla on violin, Diego Amador on bass and mandola,
Joselito Fernández on baile and Bandolero on percussion.
Flamenco is not new to Royal Albert Hall, the theater
where bailaor Joaquín Cortés' 'Live' DVD was even
recorded.

Gala. The Sevillian bailaora is to offer an advance
of 'Inmigración', a show she will soon premiere, at
the recital included in La Unión's Winners Gala scheduled
April 1st, 2003 at the Central Theater in Seville,
within the series 'Flamenco viene del Sur' ('Flamenco
comes from the South') . Gabaldón shares the bill
with Manuel Cuevas and Antonio Soto, winners in the
categories of cante and guitar, respectively, in the
last edition of the Murcia festival.

press chooses 'Un ramito de locura' by Carmen
Linares as 2002's best vocal recording.
The winners at the fourth 'Flamenco Hoy' prizegiving
- last year one award went to Flamenco-world.com for
their work spreading the word - also included vocalist
Segundo Falcón in the category of newcomer to cante,
for his album 'Un segundo de cante'. The awards for
guitar were as follows. Best guitar recording went
to Pepe Justicia for his 'Sólo agua', and best newcomer
went to Nono García for 'Atún y Chocolate'. Best guitar
accompaniment went to Gerardo Núñez for his work on
'Un ramito de locura', and Diego del Morao received
the prize for best newcomer to guitar accompaniment
for 'Lío'. In the dance category Javier Barón, Manuela
Carrasco and Javier Latorre were elected best bailaor,
bailaora and Dance Company respectively. As
for instrumental discs, prizes went to 'Sur' by Dorantes,
and to 'Flamenco Chill' by Chambao in the newcomer
category. Best percussion work was awarded to Taller
de Compás for 'Calé calé'. And finally the prize for
the media award for dissemination of the flamenco
arts goes to José María Velázquez, in recognition
of his work for Radio Nacional de España, and the
best book award to José Manuel Gamboa, author of 'Cante
por cante'.

The ‘Medalla de Oro
al Mérito del Trabajo’ is sought for Fernanda de Utrera.
A campaign, presented by Asociación Cultural Triste
y Azul, is underway to have the ‘Medalla de Oro al
Mérito del Trabajo’, a Spanish Ministry of Labor and
Social Affairs’s distinction which honors Spanish
men and women for outstanding lifetime achievement
in the arts and humanities, awarded to the legendary
singer Fernanda de Utrera, “the queen of soleá”. In
previous years flamenco artists such as Cristina Hoyos,
Lola Flores, Antonio Mairena and La Niña de la Puebla
have received the award.
