Farruquito, charged
with manslaughter by negligence. According to newspaper
'Diario de Sevilla', "the bailaor is accused of vehicular
manslaughter by negligence, failure to stop and render
aid, and providing false information" with reference
to a hit-and-run accident on September 30th 2003. According
to reports, Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya was driving
a BMW without license or insurance, when he hit a pedestrian
on a crossing, subsequently abandoning the scene. The
man who was hit died hours later at the Virgen del Rocío
Hospital in Seville. Originally, the dancer's fifteen-year-old
brother was accused of the crime, but police inquiries
led to the conclusion that the crimes were allegedly
committed by Farruquito. The bailaor was arrested on
Saturday March 27th, and appeared in court the following
day. According to the Seville daily, he admitted his
responsibility in the case. He was released on 40.000
Euro bail. The critics
name Juan Diego, Ana Salazar, Niño Josele and Ángeles
Gabaldón the year's best new artists. The 'Flamenco
Today' Awards once again stress the new generation.
Best new guitar soloist is Juan Diego in 'Luminaria',
best cante soloist is Ana Salazar in 'Ana Salazar
canta a Edith Piaf' and best accompanying guitarist
Niño Josele in 'El pequeño reloj'. Also discovered
is Ángeles Gabaldón in the show 'Inmigración', winning
the prize for best baile show. Moreover, figures have
been consolidated such as Enrique Morente, best cantaor
for 'El pequeño reloj'; and the Serranito guitarists,
best soloists for 'Sueños de ida y vuelta', and Paco
Cepero, best accompanying guitarist for 'Morrongo'
by Santiago Donday. Other instrumentalists awarded
were Diego Amador for 'Piano jondo' and Tino di Geraldo
for 'Tino'. In baile, the critics designate Farruquito
as best bailaor and Belén Maya as best bailaora. In
the book and audiovisual category, winning awards
were 'Camarón vida y obra', by José Manuel Gamboa
and Faustino Núñez, and the DVD 'Francisco Sánchez-Paco
de Lucía', respectively.
Enrique Morente takes part
in a tribute to Pepe Marchena 100 years after his
birth. On Monday, January 26th, 2004, the Spanish
Authors' Society (SGAE) and Taller de Músics have
organized a ceremony in Barcelona in memory of cantaor
Pepe Marchena, with a lecture by cantaor Enrique Morente
and researcher José Luis Ortiz Nuevo entitled 'The
Artistic and Human Personality of Pepe
Marchena'. Scheduled next is the presentation
of the commemorative double record 'Pepe Marchena'.
The ceremony, which will be held at SGAE's headquarters
in the Catalan capital at 7 p.m., will conclude with
a recital by cantaor José Miguel Cerro and guitarist
Juan Antonio España.
Flamenco contends for the
Goya Awards. Flamenco has made room for itself
on the list of nominees for the annual awards of the
Spanish Film Academy. The documentary 'Polígono Sur'
by Dominique Abel is in contention for the 'Goya'
for best documentary film. In the category of best
original song is 'Cuando me maten', a song by José
Nieto which is performed by cantaor Fernando Terremoto
Jr., on the soundtrack of the film 'Carmen' by Vicente
Aranda; and 'Atraco a tu corazón', a score by Paco
Ortega included in the movie 'Atraco a las tres...
y media'. The awards will be given out on January
31st, 2004. |
