concert held in Germany in 1996

The guitarist is accompanied by the historic septet

Flamenco-world.com, May 2004

While Paco de Lucía is going on his intense ‘Cositas buenas’ tour, a concert is recovered on DVD that the guitarist held at the Gemeringer Jazztage in Germany in 1996. The artist is accompanied in this live recording by the now historic septet formed by guitarists Cañizares and Ramón de Algeciras, cantaor Pepe de Lucía, bass player Carles Benavent, saxophonist and flute player Jorge Pardo, percussionist Rubem Dantas and bailaor Joaquín Grilo. In all, eighty minutes of the flamenco guitar maestro's live work is put within the reach of enthusiasts.

Paco de Lucía in "Directo Alemania 1996"

Paco de Lucía's followers are very happy. TDK Recording Media Europe has released on DVD one of the concerts that the guitarist held on his previous international tour; specifically, the one he held in the German city of Gemering in the setting of the 1996 Gemeringer Jazztage. The audiovisual, directed by Peter Hens, has over eighty minutes of concert, taken with high-quality picture and sound.

The excellent production shows the ‘modus operandi’ of the now historic septet on stage in all its splendor, enabling the viewer to practically join them on stage. The close-ups draw up to Paco de Lucía's very hands on the strings, to the artist's face while he performs his famous flourishes... And they also approach Jorge Pardo's flute, the hands of Joaquín Grilo, one of whose dances is entirely included accompanied on rhythm by Rubem Dantas. In fact, this audiovisual's skilful camera misses few details.

This new DVD starred in by Paco de Lucía could be considered the visual complement to the album ‘Live in America’ (1993). In fact, it includes quite a similar repertoire. Excerpted from ‘Siroco’ (1987) are ‘Mi niño Curro’ and ‘El pañuelo’. Following the bulería ‘Alcázar de Sevilla’, he performs two songs from the album ‘Zyryab’ (1990), that which gives the record its title and the rumba ‘Playa del Carmen’. The concert also concludes through rumbas, with that sort of joke called ‘Buana, buana, King Kong’ with which the live performance in America was also closed.

Paco de Lucía on DVD

The videography on the maestro from Algeciras is on the rise. Besides this new ‘Paco de Lucía. Alemania 1996’, also available is the documentary ‘Francisco Sánchez-Paco de Lucía’, which focuses on the artist's life and work, with interviews and bits from concerts; ‘Light and Shade’, another documentary portraying the artist and the person; 'Meeting of the spirits', a live concert by Paco de Lucía, John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell recorded in 1979 at London's Royal Albert Hall; as well as archive footage from Spanish Television of a young Paco de Lucía included on DVD number 24 of the collection ‘Rito y Geografía del Cante’ (‘Ritual and Geography of Cante’), devoted to flamenco guitar.
