Málaga en Flamenco 2007
has its motivations straight. On the one hand, the inspiring
number seven. And on the other, Paco
de Lucía. Throughout the festival, an
entire series of performances dedicated to the guitar
maestro has been carried out. ‘Su homenaje’
concludes with a concert by the tributee himself in grand
fashion, at La Malagueta Bullring on Saturday, September
22nd. Until it closes on September 30th, the biennial
Málaga festival has scheduled shows by artists
such as Arcángel, Israel Galván and La Cuadra
de Sevilla.

The tribute which Festival Málaga
en Flamenco pays to Paco de Lucía in its second
edition couldn’t finish any other way. On Saturday,
September 22nd, the guitar maestro is to come out to the
ring of La Malagueta to go back over his musical work
which has turned around the history of flamenco toque.
The concert is part of the extensive
international tour the artist has been on ever since his
latest album, ‘Cositas buenas’, was released.
In these performances, he combines the new repertoire
with a selection of the most emblematic pieces from his
discography, accompanied on stage by artists such as cantaoras
La Tana, Montse Cortés and Chonchi Heredia, guitarists
Niño Josele and Daniel Méndez, percussionist
Piraña, and instrumentalists like flutist Domingo
Patricio, harmonica player Antonio Serrano and bass player
Alain Pérez. Following the concert in Málaga,
Paco de Lucía will continue his tour until the
end of the year, with scheduled stops in Sweden, Brazil,
Argentina, Russia, Germany and England, among other countries
(see
complete tour).
‘Su homenaje’ Series
Since the biennial Málaga festival
began, the series ‘Su homenaje’ has offered
concerts by contemporary guitarists such as ‘Camaroneando’
by Tomatito, which took place at Playa del Palo on August
28th; ‘El alma compartida’ by Manolo Sanlúcar
at Sala Falla on September 13th; ‘Siete guitarras’,
with tocaores like Enrique de Melchor and José
Manuel León in Ronda on September 15th; and ‘Con
solera’ by Serranito on September 20th at Sala Falla.
Moreover, musicians have been gathered who were members
of Paco de Lucía’s former band, the mythical
sextet. On Wednesday, August 7th, musicians like Jorge
Pardo and Carles Benavent offered the concert ‘Siete
de Paco’ at Playa del Palo. And at the same location
‘Festejo’, a collective concert led by Rubem
Dantas, was held on August 31st.
The festival’s
home stretch
After the show by Paco de
Lucía, Málaga en Flamenco 2007
enters its home stretch. In the last week,
the bill of the festival offers premieres
like ‘Zambra 5.1’ by Arcángel
on September 26th at the Teatro Las Lagunas
in Mijas; and ‘El final de este estado
de cosas’ by Israel Galván at
the same venue on September 29th. Large-scale
shows are also presented the last week such
as ‘Cádiz’ on September
25th at the Teatro Cervantes; and ‘Flamenco
para la Traviata’ by La Cuadra de Sevilla
from September 27th to 30th at the Teatro
Cánovas.
