Enrique Morente and Tomatito inaugurate
the 2009 Ciutat Vella Flamenco Festival

Toni el Pelao, María Pagés, La Macanita and Dorantes, among other artists, highlight the lineup of the sixteenth Barcelona festival from May 19th to 23rd, 2009

Flamenco-world.com, April 2009

‘With pearls’. That’s the subheading of the 2009 Ciutat Vella Flamenco Festival since, as explained in the program, “it presents several veteran and consolidated artists, musicians at their prime and on the rise, as well as youths who are getting started. All of them share a common denominator: they’re “pearls”, some more cultivated than others with different colors and surfaces, but all with nuances of their own, which gives them authenticity and beauty”. A theory which will be put into practice at the Barcelona Contemporary Culture Center from May 19th to 23rd, 2009, by artists of the likes of Rafaela Carrasco, Isabel Bayón with ‘Tan solo flamenco’, Dolores Agujetas, La Macanita, Esperanza Fernández, Toni el Pelao & La Uchi with ‘Puro flamenco’, Dorantes with ‘Piano abierto’ together with Joaquín Grilo and Pastora Galván...

The main attraction will be the face-off between Enrique Morente and Tomatito, a concert which will not only be the opening of the festival but also the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of its organizer, Fundación Taller de Mùsics. The concerts at the main stage of Pati de les Dones are to be joined by evening and late-night concerts at the Hall, which will host offspring Enrique Morente (Jr.) and Mari Ángeles Fernández, recognized young talents like Jerez-born Jesús Méndez, rumba groups, local flamencos and even dj’s.

For the winners, there are cash prizes and statuettes which will be given out at the closing gala of the Barcelona festival. In the past edition, ‘Dame Veneno’ and ‘Morente sueña La Alhambra’ won in the category of documentaries, and ‘Será mejor’ by Muchachito Bombo Infierno and ‘La falsa moneda’ by Buika in the category of videoclips. The awards ceremony included the electronic music and flamenco concert by Artomatico in collaboration with Bandaèria, plus dancers Rafael Estévez and Nani Paños and percussionist Nacho Arimany as guest artists.
