Flamenco Festival Paris 2006 kicks off
on Wednesday 3rd May with three evenings of flamenco and
Spanish traditional dance by Ballet Nacional de España.
For the occasion the company has chosen a repertoire consisting
of ‘Grito’ by Antonio Canales, ‘Golpes
de la vida’ and ‘La leyenda’.
The program continues on 6th May with the
of flamenco dance/vocal project ‘Flamenco de cámara’
by Belén
Maya and Mayte Martín. The next day's events
are focused on women of cante, with a performance by cantaoras
Inés Bacán and Esperanza
Fernández in a twin recital entitled ‘Voces
de Lebrija’.
Then on the evening of 9th May, Parisian
audiences will get a chance to enjoy of one of the mainstays
of Flamenco Festival USA, the gala with big names of flamenco
dance, featuring Manolo Marín, Merche
Esmeralda, Rafael Campallo and Javier Barón.
On both Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th the stage of the
Théâtre national de Chaillot will be set aside
for the latest production by the Eva Yerbabuena company
- recent winner of a Max
Award. The project is inspired by poetry, and is entitled
‘A cuatro voces’.
And French audiences will also be treated
to a sample of one of the major recording sensations of
the season. ‘Lo que no se da’ by José
Mercé will be performed live on Friday 12th May.
And the icing on the cake will be supplied by Antonio el
Pipa with ‘De tablao’, a show that's already
been presented in New York, London and Jerez.
Since the première of ‘Sabores’
by Sara Baras at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées
in December and January, flamenco activity hasn't let up
in Paris. The last few months have seen visits - at the
Cirque d’Hiver to be precise - from artists such as
Miguel Poveda, Joaquín Grilo, Manolo Sanlúcar,
Tomatito and Diego el Cigala.
