The singer from San Fernando has already sold nearly
two-hundred thousand copies of 'Cañaílla'

It has long been known that flamenco is one of the most efficient ambassadors
of Spain. And some tourism institutions have begun to acknowledge the fact. The
nearly two-hundred thousand copies that were sold of the record Cañaílla
did not go unnoticed by the Cádiz town hall which has awarded the Cádiz
prize for promotion of tourism for the year 2000 to the singer from San Fernando,
Niña Pastori, for the song and the video. The award is to be shared with
the singer Alejandro Sanz, composer of the words and music for the piece.

Niña Pastori, prize in hand, who claimed to be "proud of being
from Cádiz province" is aware of the "wide critical and public
acclaim" of the song in question, as well as of the entire recording. The
figures speak for themselves. According to the singer from San Fernando, 180,000
copies of Cañaílla have already been sold of the record which takes
its title from the name given to residents of the same Cádiz town which
saw the likes of flamenco artists such as Camarón.
The singer realizes the promotional impact of the piece which, according to
her has caused "many people to tell me they're going to go live in Cádiz
only because of how I sing the song, because it has to be a beautiful place".
And not only in Spain. It's had the same effect in other countries such as Venezuela
and Mexico where "it really went over big because it has something special".
That "something" is what Niña Pastori herself cites as the reason
it was so difficult to record, "because it made me cry". And the reason
is that Cai not only speaks of "our hometown, but is moving because it's
a single made with heart, soul and love, well-accompanied and well-arranged".
The singer declares that "it's a very special song for me which I will carry
in my heart until the day I die".
Niña Pastori shares the prize with singer Alejandro Sanz, the composer
of Cai. Although Sanz was unable to attend the award ceremony in the provincial
capital last August 28, 2001 due to prior commitments, Niña Pastori pointed
out that he is "proud of having received the prize because he loves the city,
our area and the people".
The Cádiz authorities explain that the tourism prize is a "tribute"
to these "very creative" artists who were able to evoke with a song
"something that is impossible for outsiders to comprehend, and musically
represent a portrait of our land". And they go on to say that "the province
of Cádiz feels privileged to have these two fine ambassadors who, enamored
of the city and its way of life, found a way to reflect the special personality
and joy that Cádiz transmits from each and every corner".
