After his dabblings in contemporary
music, Argentinean tango and poetry in Catalan, Miguel
Poveda returns to flamenco territory. The new album
‘Tierra de calma’ will be released this coming
September, to coincide with the live première at
the 2006 Festival Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla. As he announced
in an interview for Flamenco-world.com a couple of years
ago, the album is a collaboration with Huelva-born guitarist
and composer Juan Carlos Romero, who previously produced
Arcángel.

‘Tierra de calma’ contains
a varied repertoire of flamenco palos. There's no lack of
basic styles such as tangos, bulerías, soleá
and seguiriyas, already covered on his previous discs ‘Zaguán’
and ‘Viento del este’. To this he adds other
less conventional styles like the farruca, the malagueña
and the closing toná ‘Canto de la resignación’,
which he ‘borrows’ from the latest album by
Carmen Linares. As an added twist, he takes a journey to
the borderline between flamenco and popular Spanish music,
taking on sevillanas and a copla.
As Juan
Carlos Romero explained in an interview published by
Flamenco-world.com in October 2004, “We don't want
to get into a lot of messes beyond making a flamenco album
with new compositions seeking, simply, flamenco”.
He also added that “We're not going to seek out any
question of commerciality or anything; just make an album
that we like. And Miguel Poveda is at his peak” (read
full interview).
Miguel Poveda presents ‘Tierra de
calma’ accompanied on guitar by Juan Carlos Romero
as part of the 2006
Festival Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla. The concert
is scheduled for the 28th September at Teatro Lope de Vega.
Until then, he'll continue with his tour, dropping in at
the Festival del Cante de las Minas in La Unión in
a joint venture with Luis el Zambo (6th August), the Festival
de Cante Grande Puente Genil (14th August) and the Festival
Flamenco de Isla Cristina (15th August), among other dates.
