It isn't just Andalusia that gets
to enjoy flamenco in summer. Madrid will take advantage
of the wide-ranging cultural program of the ‘Veranos
de la Villa’ season, leaving a privileged space aside
for the flamenco arts. Between 4th and 13th August 2004,
in the Sabatini gardens alongside the Royal Palace, and
with only the heavens as a covering, there's to be a series
of recitals featuring leading cantaores, guitarists and
bailaores such as Chano
Lobato, Pepe
Habichuela and El Güito, to name just a few.
Other venues across the capital also made
room for flamenco over the summer, as part of ‘Veranos
de la Villa’. The Teatro Español will be showing
‘Romancero gitano’ by the Kalos company until
1st August. Salvador Távora takes ‘Imágenes
andaluzas para Carmina Burana’ (Andalusian images
for Carmina Burana) to the Muralla Árabe, alongside
the Almudena Cathedral, between 19th and 22nd August. Arrieritos
presents ‘Entablao’ at the Teatro Pradillo from
1st to 4th September. And the distinguished open-air venue
Patio del Conde Duque played host to the collective production
‘Territorio
Flamenco’ on 25th July this year. The end of July
also saw the flamenco theater production ‘Cervantes
entre palos’ performed in the gardens, and Joaquín
Grilo played earlier in the month at the Centro Cultural
de la Villa.
