Manolo Sanlúcar brings
the soundtrack of the legendary flamenco ballet ‘Medea’
back to life on CD
Flamenco-world.com, July 2006
The music from the flamenco ballet
‘Medea’ finally gets to see the light of day.
Manolo
Sanlúcar has dusted off the composition that
he made in 1984 for the Ballet Nacional de España
and, after adapting it for solo guitar and orchestra, has
immortalized it on an album. On this recording the guitarist
from Cadiz worked with the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra.

Over the years, ‘Medea’ - directed
by Miguel Narros and choreographed by José Granero
- has become a milestone in the history of the flamenco
stage play. And his music is not to be blown away by the
winds of time. Manolo Sanlúcar already presented
a version for solo guitar and orchestra at the 2002 Festival
Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, with the Malaga Philharmonic
Orchestra conducted by Leo Brower. And with the same orchestra,
but this time directed by Alexander Rahbari, he took it
to the recording studio.
Manolo Sanlúcar pitches his flamenco
guitar against more than seventy musicians, including a
few flamenco ones: Santiago Lara on second guitar, and Antonio
Coronel and Tino
di Geraldo on percussion. The new album appears with
the original sleeve painting by Francisco Borras and a booklet
inside with the synopsis, personnel, color photos and notes
on every one of the fifteen pieces.
