Flamenco-world.com, October 2005
With the aim of “flamenco
being investigated and seen from a more serious viewpoint
so that it may thus be taught to the world with pride”,
Manolo
Sanlúcar teaches a master's course in guitar
within the setting of the 2005 Málaga en Flamenco
Festival. The master class, organized by the National University
of Correspondence Courses (UNED), will be held October 17th
to 22nd at the Civic Center of the capital city on the Costa
del Sol. The course, with a total of twenty-four credit
hours, has nearly filled up the fifteen places offered,
aimed at advanced-level students.

The course, high-level just like the one
Manolo Sanlúcar annually teaches at the Córdoba
Guitar Festival, is split into three blocks: the first,
virtuosity; the second, harmony and composing; and the third,
study of the traditional forms and structure of flamenco
guitar. With the study of these three areas, the Cádiz-born
maestro wants to fight against the non-regulated study of
flamenco music, as he has done so now for several years:
“All the teaching of this discipline in Spain and
abroad has been done by getting across the never-contrasted
personal knowledge of non-accredited instructors”.
At the same time, he charges that “so far, flamenco
guitar has not received the academic recognition it deserves.
Neither music conservatories nor university departments
have organized the further training they should for flamenco
guitarists, so the latter still lack the appropriate qualifications
so far”.
‘Málaga’ in
Seville
Málaga en Flamenco 2005 transfers
its flagship to Seville this week. The show ‘Málaga’,
directed by Paco Mora, is to be presented at Seville's Maestranza
Theater on Saturday, October 15th, with cantaor José
de la Tomasa as guest artist. The same day, nearly a month
after its premiere in the town of Vélez-Málaga,
Rocío Molina's show ‘El eterno retorno’
(‘The Eternal Return’) will be presented at
Málaga's Cánovas Theater. Sprinkled with photo
exhibits, lectures and other small-format performances,
the week closes on Sunday the 16th at the Camilo José
Cela Institute with the cante of Fosforito, magnificent
winner of the fifth Golden Key of Cante Award (Llave de
Oro de Cante).
