Paris is the city chosen by Sara
Baras to reveal her best-kept secret. The new show ‘Sabores’
(‘Flavors’) premieres Monday, December 19th,
2005 at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées
in the French capital, where it will remain on the bill
until Sunday, January 8th, 2006. The show, which has the
subheading “To Concha, my mother”, journeys
along a varied range of flamenco styles without a storyline,
just like the previous show ‘Sueños’.
Sara Baras is surrounded by a dance corps with nine dancers,
plus two guest artists: José Serrano and Luis Ortega.
The music, composed by José Carlos Gómez,
is performed live by six musicians conducted by José
María Bandera between guitars, voices, violin and
percussions.

Sara Baras will present ‘Sabores’ in Paris.
The Cádiz-born bailaora, winner of the 2003 National
Dance Prize, will present her new creation at the Théâtre
des Champs Elysées in the French capital from December
19th, 2005 to January 8th, 2006. According to the show's
program, ‘Sabores’ is “a show without
any storyline in which we savor different flamenco styles
and color each feeling”.
To do so, “musical numbers are inserted
between the baile in such a way that the show goes ‘in
crescendo’ not just in the variety of styles, but
also in the risk taken by the artists”. Tangos, seguiriya,
zambra, alegrías, taranto, tanguillos, jaleos and
bulerías… make up the show's repertoire, “which
polishes the rhythmic and melodic frontiers of flamenco
styles, which blend into the baile's color”.
Sara Baras heads a team of dancers in which
José Serrano and Luis Ortega appear as guest artists,
plus a nine-member dance corps. José Carlos Gómez
has composed the music, performed live by six musicians
conducted by guitarist José María Bandera.
Appearing on guitar are Bandera himself and Mario Montoya;
Miguel de la Tolea and Saúl Quirós on cante;
José Amador on violin; and Antonio Suárez
on percussions. The baile and music are framed within stage
design and lighting designed by Fernando Martín and
Sara Baras, which as they explain, is “concise in
order to let the color flourish”. The bailaora herself,
who directs and choreographs, has also taken care of designing
the wardrobe, which “represents one of today's flamenco
ballets, highlighting the simplicity in form of the bailaores'
costumes and the color which varies according to the meaning
of each flamenco style”.
‘Sabores’ will be put on at
the 2006 London Flamenco Festival from February 10th to
13th, and at Festival de Jerez 2006 on March 3rd.
