2007. Full program
Madrid includes another festival
on the annual flamenco agenda. With the Caja Madrid Flamenco
Festival now consolidated, the second edition of Suma
Flamenca gets on its feet with the sponsorship of the
Community of Madrid. So besides the capital, the program
spreads throughout the region, to a total of thirteen
towns. A total of forty-three shows are going to be performed
on this circuit from May 7th to 26th, 2007, which according
to the organizers aim for a balance between “classical
artists and young talents, as well as baile, cante and
guitar”. Carmen
Linares, José Mercé, Sara Baras and
Diego el Cigala, among others, are on the bill.

Pitingo’s
cante with Juan Camborio on guitar acted as a prologue
to the presentation ceremony, which took place at the
Complejo El Águila on April 11th, 2007 before a
great number of artists and other celebrities. The bulerías
version which the Huelva-born cantaor does of ‘Gwendolyn’
by Julio Iglesias was a sneak preview of the Suma Flamenca
2007 program, which was summarized by the organizers and
endorsed by the artists seated at the table: José
Mercé, Carmen Cortés and El Güito.
Festival director Juan Verdú pointed
out the presentation of the album ‘Ropavieja’
by Arcángel; the solo concert by Gerardo Núñez,
as he already did at Seville’s Teatro Central at
the 2004 Bienal; and the concerts at unique settings,
such as that of Enrique
Morente at Chinchón’s Main Square and
that of Estrella Morente at the Aranjuez Gardens, among
other top draws on the bill. He also stressed flamenco
guitar, whose “current history is going to be represented
at this festival” by Serranito, Tomatito and Jesús
de Rosario, among others.
24th Flamenco Week of Alcobendas
In total, the festival has 46 shows scheduled
at twenty-three different venues from May 7th to 26th,
2007. The thick of the festival is concentrated in the
capital, with the Teatro Albéniz as its headquarters.
Also joining it are other places like Olivar de Castillejo
for the poetry and flamenco series ‘La música
de los espejos’, the Fine Arts Circle and several
tablaos. But it also spreads throughout the region, reaching
thirteen towns. It even encompasses already noteworthy
events such as the 24th Flamenco Week of Alcobendas on
May 11th and 12th, with performances by José
Mercé and Chano Lobato, among others. The festival’s
presentation ceremony, which also included film showings,
exhibits and children’s shows, was closed with a
baile por alegrías by Catalan bailaora Belén
López.
