“We seek to change every year and make a festival different from the rest”. With that philosophy, the sixth edition is presented of Festival Suma Flamenca, to be held from June 9th to July 2nd, 2011 at different stages in the Community of Madrid. Although the epicenter is still the Teatros del Canal, where Estrella Morente inaugurates the bill, new venues join the circuit like the Teatro de la Abadía, where Carmen Linares and Lole Montoya will sing, and the Teatro Real, the stage which will host the closing show, ‘Muerte sin fin’, a work of “spectral flamenco” by contemporary composer Mauricio Sotelo which is dedicated to Enrique Morente. Artists such as Diego el Cigala, Arcángel, Rocío Molina, Tomatito and Belén Maya, among others, are also part of the great flamenco event in Madrid.
A new concert by Estrella Morente opens Festival Suma Flamenca 2011 at the Teatros del Canal in Madrid on June 9th. In the words of festival director Juan Verdú, “it will be a wonderful way to remember Enrique Morente”. So will the close at the majestic Teatro Real, where on June 29th, Mauricio Sotelo presents ‘Muerte sin fin’, a show which premiered at the 2011 Dutch Flamenco Biennial. For the occasion, he will have top-notch performers like guitarist Cañizares, cantaor Arcángel and bailaora Fuensanta la Moneta.
The core of the program will be held at the Teatros del Canal, whose stage will host shows such as the concert ‘3 flamencos’ by Diego el Cigala, Niño Josele in concert, Rocío Molina with a show in the works, Belén Maya and Olga Pericet side by side in ‘Bailes alegres para personas tristes’, Arcángel with the recital ‘Olor a tierra’… And they are joined by musicians from other parts of the world like Hungarian Marta Sebestyén and the Rumanian band Fanfare Shavale. Under its dome, the Teatro de la Abadía will have cante by Carmen Linares, Lole Montoya and María Toledo, baile by Rafaela Carrasco and Ángel Rojas, the encounter ‘Sefarad’ with Idan Raichel and Diego Guerrero as well as the children’s performances ‘Flamenco en cuatro estaciones’.
Also marked on the map of Suma Flamenca 2011 are clubs, tablaos and cultural venues where the stress will be placed on new talents. And the show ‘Madrid Flamenco Joven’ stands out, to take place on July 1st at the Paco Rabal Cultural Center. And also joining this jondo geography are towns in the region like Buitrago de Lozoya, whose walled-in grounds will host a show by Tomatito; Rivas Vaciamadrid, which will have the group Las Migas presenting ‘Reinas del matute’; El Escorial, which will host ‘La línea del Sur’ by Renaud García Fons at the Real Coliseo de Carlos III, a historic court theater.
