With vibrant variations of red
boots, Juan de Juan sealed the presentation of Suma Flamenca
2009. For its fourth edition, the Madrilenian festival offers
over sixty shows which can be seen at some thirty locations
spread throughout the capital and several municipalities
in the region. Standing out are the performances at the
Teatros del Canal, where on May 18th guitarist Vicente
Amigo presents his new album ‘Paseo de Gracia’;
those of young talents at the Teatro Calderón, among
them, Pastora Galván and María Juncal; and
those to take place in monumental settings of the likes
of El Escorial, whose auditorium will host the face-off
between Tomatito and El Cigala.
For a month and a half, both the capital
and the Madrid-area towns are going to be sprinkled with
flamenco once again. The festival Suma Flamenca 2009, which
is to take place from May 7th to June 20th at different
locations in the Community of Madrid, offers a bill which
once more lays its stakes on the combination between recognized
artists and young talents. In this fourth edition, which
has a budget of 825,000 euros, it introduces three new venues:
Teatros del Canal, Teatro Calderón and Teatro Lara.
But there is a related activity beforehand; it will be at
the Sala A of the Teatros del Canal where the show schedule
kicks off. It will be on May 11th with a collective tribute
to Miguel Candela, the deceased owner of the mythical cave
where Madrilenian flamenco was cooked up two decades ago.

The festival’s main attraction will
reach the same stage a week later: the live premiere of
the new album by guitarist Vicente Amigo, ‘Paseo de
Gracia’. Rocío Molina will also display her
‘Oro viejo’ there, while in the Sala B Mayte
Martín and Aurora Vargas will sing, where there will
be a face-off between the pianos of Diego
Amador and Mie Matsumara, and where Manuela Carrasco
will dance, among other artists. The Teatro Calderón
will specialize in shows by young talents such as Juan de
Juan, María Juncal and Dorantes with Pastora Galván,
among others. At the Teatro Lara, flamencas like Olga Pericet,
Mercedes Cortés and Betina Flater are to get together
just as Chiquetete is to sing and María José
Franco is to dance her new production with El Torta as guest
artist.
With the criteria of “decentralizing
culture throughout the region”, in the words of councilman
Santiago Fisas, the festival reaches fourteen towns. This
regional program is highlighted by concerts like the face-off
between Diego el Cigala & Tomatito and Enrique Morente’s
concert at El Escorial, the dual recital by young cantaores
Paco del Pozo and Alicia Gil at Chinchón’s
Main Square and the live ‘Raíces y alas’
by Carmen Linares at the Universidad Cisneriana of Alcalá
de Henares, among many other shows. The lineup also integrates
the two nights of cante of the 26th Flamenco Week of Alcobendas
and the program of tablaos and other concert halls in the
city. All of it is joined by a new encounter between flamenco
and poetry at the Olivar de Castillejo, which stars José
Mercé with Elvira Lindo, and Esperanza Fernández
with Antonio Gala in this edition.
