Madrid's theaters put flamenco first

Rafaela Carrasco, Esperanza Fernández and Martirio are among the highlights
on the season's program

Flamenco-world.com, January 2005

Flamenco does a tour of the Comunidad de Madrid regional network of theaters. The extensive program of music, theater and dance scheduled from January to June 2005, includes both recitals and stage productions of the flamenco arts. The flamenco vocals of Esperanza Fernández, the flamenco-tinged coplas of Martirio (accompanied on guitar by Raúl Rodríguez) and the new production by Rafaela Carrasco, ‘Una mirada del flamenco’, are the highlights of the line-up of events to be held at around fifty towns throughout the Madrid region. There's also room for flamenco's flirtations with literature such as ‘Romancero Gitano’ by Francisco Suárez, and ‘Cervantes entre palos’ by the Teatro del Duende Company. In addition, there's a look at how flamenco blends with other kinds of world music, as in the show directed by Joaquín Ruiz ‘Agua Ssafia’, featuring the Flamencos Mediterráneos Company and the Andalusí Marroquí Orchestra. And there's experimentation, too, in the Cruceta Flamenco Ballet Company's production ‘En rojo vivo’. The Suite Española Company delves into a quintessential style of flamenco - the petenera - in an experimental piece entitled ‘Garnata’.
