Tomatito
once again triumphs at the Latin Grammy Awards. The Almería-born
guitarist has won his second Grammy for Best Flamenco Album.
The one from this eleventh edition of the latin music awards
distinguishes ‘Sonanta Suite’, an album on which
his guitar converses with the National Orchestra of Spain,
conducted by Josep Pons. The repertoire includes the guitarist’s
own scores, such as the taranta, tangos and alegrías,
plus versions of songs like ‘Adiós Nonino’
by Astor Piazzolla and ‘Two much’ by Michel
Camilo, among others. The prize is repeated five years after
winning the first one for the album ‘Aguadulce’.
Other candidates for this year’s award were José
Mercé for ‘Ruido’, Niño Josele
for ‘Española’, Enrique Morente for ‘Morente
Flamenco’ and Juan Carmona for ‘El sentido del
aire’. This makes five Grammies which have been won
by flamenco guitar in the decade-long history of these awards
and which have gone to musicians of this specialty like
Paco de Lucía, Vicente Amigo and Juan Habichuela.
