New York is already preparing its annual encounter with flamenco. The ninth edition of the New York Flamenco Festival, promoted by the World Music Institute, will be held February 7th to 22nd, 2009 at several emblematic stages in the ‘Big Apple’, among them, the City Center and Carnegie Hall. A recital by cantaora Estrella Morente, the show ‘Carmen’ by the Antonio Gades Company and a family reunion with the bailaores Los Farruco are just a few of the shows on the bill.

The opening of the ninth edition of the New York Flamenco Festival will take place on February 7th at Town Hall with the gala ‘Noche de Sevilla’, which cantaor Arcángel and pianist Dorantes take part in. On February 14th and 15th, Sevillian bailaora Isabel Bayón will take her show ‘La puerta abierta’ to New York University Skirball Center, with cantaor Fernando Terremoto as guest artist.

Then on February 19th at the City Center, the Antonio Gades Company will revive the mythical show ‘Carmen’, a version which director Carlos Saura made a film of. Granada-born cantaora Estrella Morente returns to this bill with a recital scheduled for February 21st at Carnegie Hall. And the program is closed by Los Farruco with two performances of a show which brings together the family of bailaores from Seville on February 21st and 22nd at the City Center.

This ninth bill consolidates the New York festival as a reference of live flamenco in the United States. Artists such as Paco de Lucía, Sara Baras, Eva Yerbabuena, Vicente Amigo, Carmen Linares, Estrella Morente and Tomatito, among many others, besides shows like ‘Mujeres’ by Mario Maya, have already left their mark on this annual event.
