Flamenco goes
back to vinyl
Masterpieces by Camarón, Paco de Lucía, Manolo
Sanlúcar and Lebrijano are re-released on the old
format
Flamenco-world.com, June 2009
The nostalgic haven’t surrendered.
Despite the CD having replaced vinyl over two decades ago,
every year there are more and more enthusiasts who go back
to the old format little by little. And flamenco is also
a part of the trend. A few LPs which were key for the modern
history of flamenco have just been re-released on vinyl:
‘La leyenda del tiempo’ by Camarón,
‘Fuente y caudal’ by Paco de Lucía, ‘Tauromagia’
by Manolo Sanlúcar and ‘Persecución’
by El Lebrijano. A catalogue which is also joined by newer
albums such as ‘Soulería’ by Pitingo.
Time to dust off your record player.
Despite the vast gap in sales figures,
vinyl is making a comeback. If the CD is selling over four
hundred million units a year, its predecessor scarcely reaches
a million and a half. But the news is that the figure is
on the rise: multinational record companies are re-releasing
more and more LPs and music stores are making room for them
on their shelves. First they were records for DJs, then
pop and rock classics… and now flamenco joins the
new vinyl record catalogue. The first ones to arrive are
four now fundamental albums in the genre’s recent
history, all of them originally released in the ’70s
or ’80s. They are ‘La leyenda del tiempo’
by Camarón, ‘Fuente y caudal’ by Paco
de Lucía, ‘Tauromagia’ by Manolo
Sanlúcar and ‘Persecución’
by El Lebrijano. But together with these classics, a top-selling
album from today premieres on the old format; ‘Soulería’
by Pitingo.

‘Tauromagia’.
Manolo Sanlúcar
LP – 2009 Vinyl Edition. To some
theorists, 'Tauromagia' is “in its entirety,
the best flamenco guitar album ever recorded”.
On this exquisite record of composition and
interpretation from 1988, Manolo Sanlúcar
relates flamenco to the world of bullfighting
in passages of evocative beauty. It includes
scores as emblematic as ‘Maestranza’,
‘Oración’ and ‘Tercio
de varas’.

of social vindications which some cantaores
took part in. The cante by Juan Peña
is accompanied on guitar by Pedro Peña

‘Soulería’.
Pitingo
LP – 2009 Vinyl Edition. ‘Soulería’
by Pitingo contains versions halfway between
flamenco, soul and pop of songs as popular
as ‘Yesterday’, for which the
cantaor recorded with a gospel choir in London.
But it also has traditional cantes like a
soleá by Fernanda, a taranta with Juan
Habichuela and tientos by La Niña de
los Peines. The live show was a huge box office
hit last year.
