‘¡Viva Jerez!’
is reborn. After being revived a few days ago at the Teatro
Villamarta in Jerez, the show comes out on DVD. The audiovisual
captures the live recording of the premiere, which inaugurated
the past edition of Festival de Jerez with its first own
production. A total of twenty artists star in this musical
film, highlighted by bailaoras María
del Mar Moreno and Mercedes
Ruiz, as well as cantaor Fernando
Terremoto. With a running time of nearly two hours,
the DVD includes all the performances, plus a preview and
interviews.
The show which inaugurated Festival de
Jerez last year and closed Flamenco Festival London 2008
returns two-fold. The Fundación Teatro Villamarta,
author of the production, releases ‘¡Viva Jerez!’
on DVD. The audiovisual, made by i-Tek and distributed by
Flamenco World Music, covers the premiere of the show at
the inauguration of the twelfth edition of Festival de Jerez
on February 22nd, 2008. It has a total running time of 118
minutes, of which over an hour and a half corresponds to
the performances. As extra contents, a preview is included
as well as a section with interviews with the members of
the creative crew, among them, Paco
Cepero, musical coordinator; Javier
Latorre, choreography coordinator; and Francisco López,
author of the booklet and the dramatic art.
Also speaking are the starring artists,
who on that talked-about night were María del Mar
Moreno, Mercedes Ruiz and Fernando Terremoto. The lineup
includes a total of nearly twenty artists between bailaores,
cantaores, guitarists and jaleadores, highlighted by cantaores
Antonio Malena, Mateo Soleá and El Londro, guitarists
Santiago
Lara, Pascual de Lorca and Manuel Valencia, bailaor
Miguel Téllez and pianist José Zarzana.
The show is structured in seven scenes
that capture, from a broad point of view, the styles which
mark the idiosyncrasy of Jerez flamenco, as well as the
crosses and influences received, laying out a route from
the field to the taverns and from family art to professional,
leading to theaters and international tours. Styles are
seen and heard in this film such as the lullaby, cantes
de trilla, verdial, toná, martinetes, seguiriyas,
milonga, tangos, rumbas, farruca, zambra, cantiñas,
fandangos, and of course, bulerías, the style marking
the exuberant grand finale.
Live
Simultaneously, on January 30th and 31st,
2009 the show was performed again at the Teatro Villamarta
in Jerez, within the general program of its season. The
lineup of artists for both performances was headed up by
Jerez-born bailaoras María del Mar Moreno and Leonor
Leal as guest artists, plus veteran maestra Angelita
Gómez, who carries out a special collaboration.
They are joined by cantaores Antonio
Malena, Ezequiel Benítez and Tamara Tañé,
guitarists Santiago Moreno, Javier Patino and Pascual de
Lorca, and bailaor Miguel Téllez, among many other
artists. The finishing touches are being made on the agenda
of the upcoming tour of theaters around Spain.
