“For everyone to sing for me and me to feast myself on dancing”. That’s the simple idea which inspires Eva Yerbabuena when preparing to celebrate her company’s tenth anniversary. She will do so at the 2008 Granada International Music and Dance Festival with a gala with every cantaor who has ever been in her ballet as guests. Miguel Poveda, Arcángel, Marina Heredia and Segundo Falcón will inspire the Granada-born artist’s dancing on the night of June 27th, 2008, with the Generalife Gardens as the stage.

Eva Yerbabuena wants to make the celebration of the first decade of her company’s career a shared ceremony. The Granada-born bailaora and choreographer is shaping up a gala “based on the work we’ve done so far”. And to do so, she wants to surround herself once again with the cante figures that have collaborated with the company. Miguel Poveda, Arcángel, Marina Heredia and Segundo Falcón are invited to this special gala, which is to be held in the setting of the 2008 Granada International Music and Dance Festival on June 27th.

At the matchless stage of the Generalife Gardens, they will all join the company’s current group of artists, consisting of eight dancers; cantaores Enrique Soto, Pepe de Pura, José Valencia and Jeromo Segura; and guitarists Paco Jarana - the ballet’s musical director -, Manuel de Luz and Salvador Gutiérrez. And that night they will also have the participation of contemporary dancer Patrick de Bana.

Together, they will celebrate the anniversary of this flamenco ballet, one of the most solid ones on today’s scene. Since it was founded in 1998, the company has taken shows all over the world such as ‘Eva’, ‘5mujeres5’, ‘La voz del silencio’, ‘A cuatro voces’, ‘El huso de la memoria’ and ‘Santo y seña’. Work which has been marked by awards such as the 2001 National Dance Prize, several Max Performing Arts Awards and the invitation to co-preside over the Festival Montreal en Lumière, besides collaborations with contemporary dance maestra Pina Bausch at the Tanztheater Wuppertal.

Flamenco at the 2008 Granada Music Festival

Besides Eva Yerbabuena’s gala, the fifty-seventh edition of the outstanding festival in Granada will have other flamenco contributions. Scheduled for June 26th at the Patio de los Aljibes is the show by Marina Heredia in a face-off with Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui. They will be backed by musicians from both cultures such as percussionist Idriss Agnel, flamenco guitarists José Quevedo ‘El Bola’ and Luis Mariano, and violinist Kheir-Eddine M’Kachich, among others. The jondo genre will return on Saturday, July 5th, but this time at the Teatro Isabel la Católica. Dospormedio & Cía., a ballet directed by Rafael Estévez and Nani Paños, will perform the show ‘Flamenco XXI’, which had already been presented at festivals like Málaga en Flamenco 2007 and Festival de Jerez 2008. Moreover, the itinerant program Fex 08 which will travel around the province of Granada includes recitals by cantaor Juan Pinilla and by bailaora Patricia Guerrero.
