In the music “collection” ‘Vientos flamencos 2’, Jorge Pardo launches a refreshing regard at traditional Spanish music. And the thing is that not only does he take care of delving deep into the dialogue between jazz and flamenco which he is an outstanding forerunner of, but is also inspired by Spanish pasodoble, joropos and Latin American guajiras and classical Isaac Albéniz. The album moreover includes songs of his own such as the bulerías ‘Ya puedo empezar’ and a double tribute to Camarón: the soleá ‘Homenaje al Chaqueta’ and ‘Viejo mundo’. The eighth solo album by the Madrilenian saxophonist is a record with a collaborative spirit recorded at home studios in which nearly thirty musicians are heard.

THE MOST EXCITING GAME, BY JORGE PARDO

Learning is the most exciting game. Sometimes, experience is an obstacle. And if there’s anyone who’s annoying, it’s the ‘Talibans’ of any religion or discipline or job. They worship the method and despise the essence. Thus, the ‘Talibans’ of art, of flamenco, of jazz, they insist on authorizing or forbidding, always at the wrong moment, different currents of art or thought, writing theses or reviews where, like each and every person in his activity, they mainly reflect their miseries.

Everything’s within the same rhythm and the same chord
Sorry, I lost my train of thought...

Most jazz musicians used to make music out of necessity - economic, social purely artistic -; among their anxieties, apart from the aforementioned ones, was for sure that of spreading their art, their existence, denouncing their problems, those of their families, showing their face to the world, their ways, their truth, their way of seeing the world, life, collectively and individually. I fell in love with it. The music, besides being beautiful, had soul... The soul is hidden when the needs are more selfish and wretched.

Being number 1 is nonsense; it’d be enough to be “one” What bothers me is the -ism of things. Thus, I like flamenco and not ‘flamenco-ism’, I like Picasso and not ‘Picasso-ism’ … To maintain the level of quality, you also have to maintain the level of mediocrity … that’s called “homogenizing”… You can’t subject everything to homogenization, things are the way they are … like bread tastes different from one end to the other, top and bottom, inside and out.
Flamenco is like a big city. No matter how big a neighborhood or an artist is, they aren’t anything without the rest of the city …
More often than not, public notoriety is a hindrance for creativity and genuine satisfaction in your work.
Now with nearly every film that’s made, a parallel one is made which is later exploited with the title “The Making of”. Some of them are interesting, but it would also be interesting for them to shoot “Why Was ... Made?”.
