Another new voice. Another voice from Huelva. Argentina,
who grew up between the fandangos of her homeland
and a school of cante, has an air of Arcángel
about her, but in feminine form and in search
of a personality of her own. For her debut album
she's opted for catchy tunes, sung sweetly and
with a virtuoso edge. Tangos, bulerías,
rumba, alegrías and even fandangos are
all polished up, translated for the less expert
listener and equipped with choruses sung in unison,
leaving ample scope for her vocal prowess.
The ‘pop’ sheen doesn't
clash, though, with the flamenco content of her
repertoire - this is a cantaora who knows her
stuff, and who's in search of new horizons. In
fact, the disc includes a guajira - a much neglected
cante of late - as well as a seguiriya por derecho,
which she admits is her favorite style. A colorful
album by this rising star of cante, who surrounds
herself with outstanding Jerez-born guitarists
each with a character of his own: Manuel Parrilla,
Juan Diego, Diego del Morao, and José Quevedo
‘Bolita’ who cuts his teeth as a producer
on this album.
With this solid backing, the
cantaora from Huelva presents her first public
offering, in the vein of recent cante albums such
as those of La Tana, Montse Cortés, Sonia
Miranda... The difference is in her voice.
